How don't they? Sports are a big part of pretty much every culture.

Yeah, but I don't think you fail at cultural awareness if you don't know the scores and performance of the various teams in another country. I know more or less how Rugby and Cricket* are played, but I don't think I'm really failing at being aware of British and Australian culture just because I couldn't tell you who won the Ashes Cup last year**.

*Ok, this is something of a lie. I've read the rules to Cricket, and I guess I understand the basic idea, but I think I'd still be pretty confused if I tried to watch or play it.

**It was Australia, I just found that out when I Googled to make sure I was remembering the name of the tournament correctly.
