The inescapable Johnny Depp
« on: 25 Sep 2008, 12:31 »

So quite a line up of films from Mr. Depp over the next few years...

"Walt Disney Studios held a massive event today at the Kodak Theatre in LA, during which the Studios’ chairman, Dick Cook, made a string of announcements about their upcoming movies over the next few years.

And Johnny Depp was at the heart of it all.

The actor showed up on stage for a triple announcement which apparently ties him to Disney for some time. That announcement was:

• That Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean 4.

• That he will star as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s next movie, Alice In Wonderland.

• Neither of those were huge surprises, but the next one was. Boy, was it.

For Depp has signed on to star as Tonto in a movie version of The Lone Ranger, which will be produced by Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Now that's surprising - not just because Tonto is traditionally a role for a Native American (although Depp's great-grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee, and of course he played a Native American in his self-directed film, The Brave), but because it's very much a sidekick role to the flashier Lone Ranger, a masked crusader for justice in the Old West. So if Disney has Depp in the second banana role, they must have someone really special lined up for the Ranger himself. And, of course, we imagine that Tonto will get a lot more to do in this movie.

Details on the timeline of all three movies are a little sketchy right now, but since Burton starts shooting in a couple of months on Alice In Wonderland, expect Depp to head into that first. That might not be a huge role, anyway.

Then, it should be onto The Lone Ranger, which has a provisional release date of 2010. Interestingly, this could put it up against Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow's The Green Hornet. Why interestingly? Well, Britt Reid - aka The Green Hornet - is The Lone Ranger's great-nephew.

Of course, The Green Hornet is a Sony movie, so it's unlikely that we'll see them team up, a la Tony Stark turning up in The Incredible Hulk, but it'll still be fun to see who wins the Battle Of The Reid Family in 2010...

And after that, then we'll see Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow, although Pirates 4 is currently only in early development. But, given that Depp staggered on stage at the Disney event in full Captain Jack make-up and costume, it's clearly a role he's itching to get back to."

WHY ARE THEY MAKING ANOTHER PIRATES MOVIE. THEY DIDN'T NEED TO MAKE THE LAST TWO. THIS CAN ONLY RESULT IN CATACLYSMIC DISASTER.

I'm fine with him as Tonto...Johnny Depp has no problem playing secondary characters and I applaud him for that. I'm also fine with him as The Mad Hatter...as long as he doesn't reprise his character from Willy Wonka, wow what a terrible movie. The news that deeply startles me is a Pirates 4.  I only enjoyed Pirates I. Pirates II was....boring...and Pirates III I didn't even bother watching.  Another Pirates? Why?  The answer is money...but I'd like it to be something more.

They're making a sequel to Dead Man, I hear it's going to be a musical prequel and they're going to integrate footage of Robert Mitchum tapdancing in a dress with CG.

Good lord you people are so... negative.

I didn't like the PotC trilogy. I thought the first was too long, the 2nd outright painful and never bothered with the third. In terms of raw style, however, there is a lot to like. Where they went wrong was improvising based on one light weight film. After all, even the first was never meant to be anything more than a charming cash in. Making a 4th stand alone movie could turn out quite well now that they aren't saddled with the Bloom+Knightley romance. And if they make a trilogy out of a new one? Well, couldn't be worse than the first one, since at least this time it sounds like all parties involved want an actual plan in place before committing to 3 movies again.

Yeah, I suppose I should apologize, considering that Imagist's post was ironic. I'm just oversensitive about it after being exposed to pure, unbridled PotC nerd rage earlier today when I stopped by Target.

With Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen and Deep Roy as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, yeah?

Yeah.

Someone revoke Tim Burton's casting license.

Seriously, why don't Depp and Burton just make a porno and get it over with?  I'm not tired of either of them, I'm tired of their constant working with each other.  It's getting to the point where it's embarassing.

I have to say the only thing I am not disappointed about is that Johnny Depp will be playing Jack Sparrow.  For me he was the only reason to see the last two.

But yeah, when Tim Burton asks to direct the studious should just say no.

Am I allowed to draw a comparison between the Pirates series and the Evil Dead series?  Because I think that in 15-20 years, people will still be watching even the second and third movies, just because they do such a good job of being a silly bad movie that perfectly exemplifies a silly fun movie archetype.  Which Evil Dead movie was it that had the stupid fucking slapstick scene with the random Lilliputians?  That kind of shit is what MAKES movies like that fun, and even the third Pirates movie wasn't as bad as that when you get down to it.

Also I am excited about the Mad Hatter.

No.

I'm also tired of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton.  The movies they make together are great...they're cool...but they all feel exactly the same.  Sweeney Todd was awesome but I was getting the Willy Wonka/Sleepy Hollow/Corpsebride/every collab they've done vibe and it made the film more "meh" for me.  I want Burton to do more things with different actors...do you remember how great Big Fish was?  Ewan McGregor did such a superb job and the film was so different from anything Burton I've ever seen before.

I don't know about this Alice movie. I mean, Tim Burton has directed tons of shitty movies and a few gems, Sweeney Todd being one of the few gems. However, we have to realize that as an adaptation, Sweeney Todd was a little sucky. Thankfully every other feature in the movie made up for it, but I don't know about Alice. That is something that has to be RIGHT to be right. I wouldn't mind a full adaptation of the original Wonderland book, though, without the Through The Looking Glass parts.

When they make the new pirates movie, it should be solely about Captain Jack, he's the only really great character, and the only reason most people even watch the movies.

I think johnny depp is an absolutely brilliant actor, but that's probably because he's completely crazy.  I hope that alice in wonderland is like the book, somebody needs to make an alice in wonderland movie that's actually like the book was, and nobody seems quite capable.  They're not doing enough drugs is why, but Tim Burton probably does ;)

At the very least, we can count on this to be oodles of doodles better than Marilyn Manson's never-to-be-actually-made Lewis Caroll film. I'm sure all the money that had been raised to make that happen has lodged itself in the nooks and crannies of Brian Warner's nostrils.
