What are you listening to?

There's also "not getting it".
Of all the things I've uploaded to the mediaf!re thread Stockhausen's Gruppen (orchestral, not electronic, that one) is one of the most downloaded, and Kontakte (electronic with added instruments) makes a good showing too.

oh fuck off!!! how is it that people put these psuedo-intellectual, so called "experimental" genres on some sort of pedestal? you wouldn't tell someone who didn't like, say, the backstreet boys, that the reason was that they "don't get it" would you?! and if i played a napalm death album to someone who didn't like it, most people would laugh in my face if i told them "oh, it's just that you don't GET napalm death." so whats so fucking different about Stockhausen, that i can't be allowed to have a negative opinion of his music without being told that i "don't get it."
and judging albums by how many people download it, is like saying all best-selling records are brilliant. kid rock sells millions of records, is he a musical genius?

I have to agree. In my country there is some serious mind-fucking going on, as the popularity of a certain "genre" of (stretching the term almost impossibly) music is rising - the turbo folk. You are lucky you have none of that shite over there (wherever you are). The basic argument of retards (the army of) listening to that shite is "How come everyone is listening to it if it's crap? Huh, wiseass?" and "You just don't get it."
I'm not saying that Stockhausen is crap, or good, in fact - never heard of it. Just wanted to say that I agree with the "numbers mean shit" statement.
Thank you,
managment.
Anyhow, back to the topic:

Cool your jets, man, it's not that big a deal. This is just a thread where people post what they're listening to and not commenting on it. I think Paul's just saying that perhaps more people than you might think have an understanding of the music in which they like it. This doesn't mean that it's objectively good, it just means you haven't found a situation or frame of mind in which you can enjoy it, so you've chosen not to.
