What are you listening to?

Most of the time I don't mind what my co-worker plays, but god damn I hate Katy Perry.
Also, Spoon, dude. You might not agree with Paul, but at least hear him out. Many of my friends can't get into the music I like (namely: post rock) because they don't get it. All that really means is the tastes they've acquired don't allow them to appreciate what is going on in other kinds of music, or they are just used to a certain kind of delivery of aesthetic in what they listen to. For example: I have a close friend who listens pretty exclusively to pop punk and hardcore (Rise Against, Black Flag, Anti-Flag, the Dead Kennedys, etc., and I'm going to lump Against Me! in there), and he just doesn't get what Explosions in the Sky or bands like that are trying to accomplish because he's used to aggressive, upbeat music that uses lyrics to convey a feeling or message instead of trying to draw from the subconscious using abstract arrangements.
Uh, yeah. I think needlessly went into detail about something everyone knows already. Yeeaaahh...

fair enough, i see what you guys are getting at, but it's entirely possible to completely "get" a certain piece of music, and STILL vehemently dislike it. now i don't for one minute claim to have any sort of all-encompassing knowledge on their works, but i've heard several pieces of music by Stockhausen and similarly, John Cage, and i've read about their approaches to composition and the theories and ideas they were using. i find it, for the most part, fascinating. i understand what they were trying to do. however, for me, music is about enjoyment of the sound, and emotional impact. this is why i don't like Stockhausen's music (or at least what i've heard so far) - taken purely as a piece of music, i do not find it enjoyable to listen to, and the fact that it's the result of an experiment makes it seem a little clinical and thus not very emotionally affecting. i'd happily sit and watch a documentary on how Stockhausen or similar experimental composers composed their pieces, but the music alone is just unpleasant.
that said, i apologise for being a little aggressive back there, i just felt that what pwhodges said came off as kinda pretentious. as i mentioned though, i haven't heard ALL of Stockhausen's stuff, and when i've got the time to spare to properly give it a listen, i'll download those albums from the mediaf!re thread.
and just so i'm not COMPLETELY off-topic here.... "The Fall of Math" by 65daysofstatic is currently recieving listenage.

Spoon,
Not all music is as shallow as pretty sounds. Sometime music is art, and makes statements beyond the literal. This is not to say that popular music can't do the same thing, but experimental and avant-garde musics sometimes sacrifice the pretty sound aspect of what people enjoy about music for a more conceptual value. You don't think of dance music and ambient music as having the same cultural function, do you? The avant-garde requires a different sort of thinking. No one could actually listen to all of John Cage's As Slow as Possible; no one lives long enough, and I doubt it would really be all that interesting to do so, but by its very existence it causes people to think about the nature of art and music.
Also: "Lost in the Supermarket" - The Clash
Edit: Okay so you know what the deal is and I don't need to be all blunt about it. At least you understand the fundamental differences, and realize that the way you think about music and its function is what excludes Stockhausen from the music you enjoy. (Do I sound like a dick? I am really not trying to be but I have a tendency to be terse).

I understand completely. I once heard a performance of a John Cage piece, and if it weren't as fascinating in terms of composition and method, I'd have hated it. I certainly would not listen to it on a regular basis, however. It would probably drive me insane.
