--- Quote from: spoon_of_grimbo on 03 Dec 2008, 10:52 ---i've heard several pieces of music by Stockhausen and similarly, John Cage, and i've read about their approaches to composition and the theories and ideas they were using.  i find it, for the most part, fascinating.  i understand what they were trying to do.
--- End quote ---

OK, I didn't see that in your first reaction - sorry.  Your lecturer plays you stuff - what's your course?

--- Quote ---however, for me, music is about enjoyment of the sound, and emotional impact.  this is why i don't like Stockhausen's music (or at least what i've heard so far) - taken purely as a piece of music, i do not find it enjoyable to listen to,
--- End quote ---

To my mind his music gets less pleasant to listen to, and also less interesting, through his career.  Indeed, the piece of his I most enjoy  listening to is the first well-known piece, Gesang der Juenglinge,  which I uploaded a couple of weeks ago.  I was also privileged, while working at the BBC, to record the rehearsals and performance of one of his orchestral improvisatory pieces (with him in charge, and I got to meet him); it was fascinating, but the concert/broadcast was a flop.  One of the rehearsals was such that I would love to hear it again, but no way will it have survived.

--- Quote ---the result of an experiment makes it seem a little clinical and thus not very emotionally affecting.
--- End quote ---

All   worthwhile music in any period is an experiment - if the composer/performer is not pushing the boundaries somewhere  then the result will ultimately be bland and uninteresting.

--- Quote ---i just felt that what pwhodges said came off as kinda pretentious.
--- End quote ---

You're not the first to say that to me, and probably not the last; but I like to share my knowledge and experience.  I am often rather terse as well, and sometimes that comes over as daunting.  And hey, for pretentious, how about that I have actually performed Cage's 4'33" in concert...
