serioulsy he is one of the grooviest fuckin composers. seriously this shit should not of been written in the early 19th century but it was fuckballs this shit is fasacinating (obviously im on a chopin kick right now, probably cause im writing a goddamn piano piece).

ahhhhhhhhh i swear this shit is so groovy ah god.

Alkan was a recluse, who lived in Paris close to Liszt and Chopin - both of whom looked up to him as a performer.  His piano music is strange, and much is fantastically difficult.  His rediscovery over the last few decades was led by my piano teacher, Ronald Smith - listen here and here.

My favourite work is the Grand Sonata Op 33 "The Four Ages of Man".  This depicts life at 20, 30, 40 and 50 (as he imagined it; it seems more like 90!) - so each movement is slower than the one before, ending with one of the slowest movements ever written (I've not heard any other pianist dare take it as slow as Ronnie) - here is the first part of that last movement; you can follow the links to the rest, and to the whole sonata.
