Indie Rock Movie trailer finally up!
« on: 05 Nov 2008, 23:24 »

Hey everyone!  I've been working on a feature-length film for a while now.

It's a mockumentary about a band called Solar Bear, featuring members of Man Man, The Microphones/Mt. Eerie, Pedro The Lion, Conor Oberst's Mystic Valley Band, Sorry About Dresden, and a bunch more.

If you're an indie rock nerd at all, hopefully you'll find some humor in this film.  It'll be making it's way around the festival circuit in the coming seasons, and if you like this trailer, let me know what you think and please tell your friends about it.  I basically just want to share this film with others who may have been to too many shows or own too many records.

Here's the link!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avOziFg7K4Y

Thanks for your time and patience.  I hope you enjoy it.

Your trailer looks decent, but I don't really want to see it based on that. It seems like it's based too much on us recognizing the people being interviewed, and there's not enough about the band or really any reason for us to want to see it? No connection, I guess.

I'd watch it for free, probably.

Isn't Pedro the Lion an emo band?.. I mean, they were on Jade Tree...

And what Ghosts said.

There is an actual band called Solar Bear. They're not very good.

Oh wait is the movie supposed to be about the actual band and not a made up band?

Is it supposed to be funny?

I honestly can't tell.

This is about a fictitious band.  The actual band (from Denver) started after I started shooting this movie.

No, Pedro The Lion is not an emo band.

Yes, it's supposed to be funny.  I'm just trying to figure out if it's funny to people outside the indie music industry.  Right now, it's my understanding that it's funny to most anyone that's been in a touring indie rock band, and like, the few other people who know things about tour history of bands from the last twenty years, but that seems to be the target market right now.

I've been in plenty of these so-called indie rock bands of which you speak, and I didn't find the trailer funny at all.

Which is why I was confused as to whether it was trying to be.  It doesn't look particularly bad, just... I don't know, the "humor" is way too subtle, it's not like Indie Rock Spinal Tap if that's what you were aiming for.

i got really excited when i read "Man Man" then subsequently got really bummed when i read "Conor Oberst."

so i guess you could say i'm conflicted. also, i haven't watched the trailer because i'm at work.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Conor Oberst isn't in it, just members of his band with Maria Taylor.

Also, Jackie Blue, I was angling for subtle humor with both the scripted segments and the editing.  The whole movie was made under a methodically similar manner to most of Christopher Guest's films, with a heavy amount of improvisation on the part of all the actors/interviewees.

Also, I'm not sure why an indie rock take on the same sort of film as This Is Spinal Tap wouldn't be FAR more subtle in its humor.  Just compare the level of ostentatious spectacle between the two subcultures at the given times.  I worry about the subtleties being lost, but I think the full version of the film allows time to flesh them out.

I'm bummed you guys didn't think it was funny though.

I thought it was clever, but not really laughing-type funny.

I was under the impression it was a serious documentary.  I chuckled at some stuff in the trailer, but I'd say the humor needs to be a bit more direct?

Maybe it's just the way it was cut? I think an Indie Spinal Tap has the possibility to be hilarious, but I didn't think the trailer was all that funny. Part of the problem was that I had difficulty hearing the actors talk over the backing music and they mumbled a lot. Anyway, I might Netflix it.

It made me smile. The humor was very subtle, and I think it was very directed at the specific audience you mentioned earlier, but I definately "got it." I wouldn't expect many big laughs from it, but I would probably go see it an chuckle a bit.

I liked it. I agree that the humor is very subtle but it still seems like something I would want to watch.

I think the reason the humor needs to be more direct is that most ACTUAL documentaries of indie rock bands are like the trailer.  I mean, one could show Kill Your Idols to someone who has never heard the bands it's about and totally think it was a mockumentary about a fake scene.

Isn't that part of the point?

Indie rock bands can be really ridiculous, and it's just taken at face value a lot of the time.  To construct a fictitious band which pulls from all the inherent humor in what happens on the road and make it nearly indistinguishable from what may actually have happened; that's all I could hope to do, really.

It made me chuckle a little bit. I would definitely watch the full "documentary" at some point.

It was a lot more bearable about four years ago before every asshat and their cousin logged on 'cause they heard "CONDOR ORBITZ" when he posted those two top-charting singles.

...and I'm still one of only eight Sorry About Dresden fans outside of North Carolina...

I don't even know half of those bands...

I'd watch it, but... I wouldn't tell all my friends about it. I'm not exactly the music nerd that everyone else here is. I know the bands, but I can't tell you the names of the drummer's third cousin, twice removed. I just listen to the music.

Now, if you made a documentary about The Weakerthans and The Whitest Boy alive... Now THAT I'd watch.
