I don't think of that as being an album that displays much of a large vocal range. Sheff is a great singer to be sure but I don't think his range matches Sumac's.

As far as mainstream pop music vocal ranges, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam has an excellent voice, and actually sounds better live than on record.

I don't think his range is super wide though.

jeff buckley had a four-octave range (which apparently is hereditary, as his dad tim had the same range), and it's blatantly obvious if you listen to the title track on "grace."  holy shit, that is an awesome display of vocal (and emotional) power.

There's this guy Jimmy Gnecco who was a friend of Buckley's and sounds a lot like him. Has a fairly good range.

QFT

I saw them when they stopped in Hawaii to open for U2, and after them, I was basically as thoroughly satisfied as I've been with many longer, great concerts.  U2 was good, too, for the record.  Had to do about nine encore songs because they had postponed their show for a year.

Don't worry, that's all the U2 talk you'll hear from me...

Jeff Buckley's vocal range makes me feel ashamed of myself.

But then Mike Patton's range seems pretty wide?

isn't moonchild an iron maiden song?

but yeah, patton's got an amazing range (particularly the lows - he can go RIDICULOUSLY low when he wants to) in terms of pitch, but also in terms of actual timbre.  i dont think there's a single singing style that this guy couldn't pull off.

I wouldn't know about it being a Maiden track. It's the name of one of John Zorn's albums- He composed all the music and Patton, Trevor Dunn and Joey Baron performed it.

Or a King Crimson song...

Large vocal range has always been a point of enormous envy for me, particularly on the high end.  No doubt this envy is due to my listening to Freddie Mercury extensively while growing up.

Listen to some sophisticated Broadway music by Anthony Warlow, for a taste of well-managed wide vocal range, you fucks.

Captain Beefheart could sing in 8 octaves, and he could sing in none of them very well.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

HELL. YES.  I was going to say that as I scrolled down this thread, but you have done so before me.  Kudos, good sir.

Also if any of you have not yet picked up the Jekyll & Hyde 1994 Concept Cast soundtrack, DO SO.  It is still my favorite work by Anthony Warlow.  Pure genius.

I don't think Serj's power really comes from his range- he's a pretty classic Tenor-Baritone. It's the fact that he can take advantage of the unique voice he has to make some truly amazing SOUNDS.
I've heard him likened to Tom Morello, but for voice. This video's a pretty good example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE1qx077Nqk
And if you've heard him live, its a little apparent that a lot of his vocal stuff comes through studio manipulation. (although not enough for him to botch a live performance)

Serj is a douche almighty. He (and, really, the entirety of SOAD) is a ridiculously ardent Armenian nationalist. This results in him randomly shouting, at concerts "fuck the Turks!"

Plus his voice isn't really that high or low.

One thing about Tom Morello is he's famous for his guitar work wayyy before his vocal work.  His vocals aren't anything amazing, just usually deep-voiced male (i don't know much about vocal terms).  I saw Serj open for the Foo Fighters back in January, and he was OK, but just that.  Certainly nothing special.  I don't like his music so, so that might have been it.  And watching him dance around on stage and party-boy and stuff like that was stupid haha.

I actually meant that Serj's experiments with vocal sounds reminded me of Morello's work with guitar (although I still have yet to see Serj come up with anything near equal to the sounds Morello coaxes out of that axe).

Jon Anderson/Benoit David of Yes; the late, great Freddie Mercury of Queen; Chris Cornell of Soundgarden/Audioslave (was better by far w/ Soundgarden before he screamed his lungs out); and the late, great Layne Staley of Alice in Chains all had pretty damn impressive range.

I haven't really heard much of a low end from Bellamy, so I cannot form an opinion.  I will say that the higher he goes, the less oomph he seems to have.

I have quite a small range...Well, as in, I really hate singing high. I can go up to middle C, and down to 'bottom G' (not sure whether this is G1 or G2 atm), but my voice hasn't fully broken yet.

Not so much any more, since he had those vocal nodules removed.
