Large Vocal Ranges Rare?
Puki:
Damn, I would like to have Serj Tankian's vocal range. Then I would be famous. If I wasn't from some country no one ever heard of...

HELL. YES. I was going to say that as I scrolled down this thread, but you have done so before me. Kudos, good sir.
Also if any of you have not yet picked up the Jekyll & Hyde 1994 Concept Cast soundtrack, DO SO. It is still my favorite work by Anthony Warlow. Pure genius.

Yeah, cause every metal fan knew where Armenia was before SOAD.
Cadeonehalf:
I don't think Serj's power really comes from his range- he's a pretty classic Tenor-Baritone. It's the fact that he can take advantage of the unique voice he has to make some truly amazing SOUNDS.
I've heard him likened to Tom Morello, but for voice. This video's a pretty good example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KE1qx077Nqk
And if you've heard him live, its a little apparent that a lot of his vocal stuff comes through studio manipulation. (although not enough for him to botch a live performance)
RedLion:
Serj is a douche almighty. He (and, really, the entirety of SOAD) is a ridiculously ardent Armenian nationalist. This results in him randomly shouting, at concerts "fuck the Turks!"
Plus his voice isn't really that high or low.
