Saw, the game (yes, they're making it)
« on: 09 Nov 2008, 15:14 »

so gaming journalists get a teaser from jigsaw, yadda yadda yadda, there's going to be a saw game sometime around autumn '09.

what's it going to be like? it all depends in how you play and who you play as. it could be damn amazing, or ridiculously shit, though the best suggestion i've heard is like something along the lines of the halo 2 scenario where you switch between two slowly converging stories, like as a cop, then a victim, and back and forward, hell, they could adapt the storyline depending on what subjects survive and fail. opinions?
loved the 1st and 3rd, the other two were routine disappointments, want to see the 5th while it's still in cinemas.

Sorry, what? Is there seriously any hope that this won't be as utter shite as the movies?

I could see it as a puzzle game. Those are easy to fuck up though.

Could be quite interesting seeing a puzzle game where the solutions to the puzzles end up in you mutilating yourself.
But that's not going to happen. It's just going to be shit.

There are very few film-to-video game adaptations that are worth a mention.

Although not as bad as the vice-versa industry.

Riddick was good.

Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was the best, but that was just a coincidental release, I think. It was more about the comics than the movies.

i actually enjoyed the more recent The Incredible Hulk film tie-in game.

i mean, it wasn't worth buying or anything but i rented it and it was fun for the entire five days i had it.

apparently this is being developed by Brash Entertainment who have given us such enjoyable games as: Alvin and the Chipmunks.  Who could ever forget their absolute masterpiece of Jumper: Griffin's Story?  I'd like to see some gameplay screens or trailers just so I could tell whether or not I'm even interested in the game at all.  I've seen all the movies and was bored to tears..but maybe the game might be slightly different.

I really do not understand how this could make a good game. Either you are being tortured in gruesome ways or you are torturing someone else in gruesome ways. I would not want to play it.

Hmm... I could see it being a competitive multi-player online type game, with the players taking on the roles of people trapped in a puzzle maze as in Saw II, with the mazes being user-generated.

I mean, it would still suck, but at least it would suck creatively.

Man, if that award was going to exist it would have existed years ago for Manhunt. Talk about fucked up.
I'm actually sure the game won't be half as gruesome as the movies. It'll probably be a lame, poorly made platform/action game with jerky controls where you have to navigate lame timed puzzles and jump onto platforms over pits of rusty thumbtacks and then suddenly have a shootout b/c all of a sudden Jigsaw has henchman except the aiming controls are all fucked up so you'll end up with the camera swinging all around you making you wish for Dramamine and allowing you to notice the overall muddiness of the graphics in a whole new way. If there was a reward for that, my guess would be that Saw: The Game might win.

Or, it'll be like those flash games, the "escape from the room" type. But they'll sell it for $40 and you'll do the same shit over and over.

And at the end, it'll tell you good work for sitting through all that shit and leave it open for a sequal.

I really hope this game dies. The movies sucked, and I can't imagine anything that comes from them doing anything but sucking. Oh well, since the company's going under, maybe we'll be spared. If we're lucky.

Man, the only way this game could catch my attention is if it was just like Fantastic Contraption, except you have to decapitate some dude and launch his head across the map. Even then, I'd still probably just play Fantastic Contraption.

You know they made a video game out of Resivour Dogs.
That is a movie that is about talking, with a total of 20 minutes of action.

just one more thing, they're using the unreal gaming engine, as in the same one they use for gears of war, so i don't think theres gonna be too much of a problem graphics-wise. and physics should work well enough, actually, all they'll have to worry about is overkill. :-P

No, actually, they'll have to worry about everything. Seeing as, y'know, the Unreal engine has been used in literally hundreds of game ranging from ugly (Rainbow Six Vegas comes to mind) to slightly less ugly. No AA support still sucks, and the engine definitely doesn't determine how the poly count turns out. Physics beyond ragdolls still aren't a standard part of UE3, either.

UE4, on the other hand, is shaping up nicely. It's much more adaptable than the Source engine (my personal golden standard), but we'll see if it's any better.

It's my opinion that a non-modified UE3 looks ass-ugly. Gears of War, shit, have you seen those characters' hands?

(crude, I know, but it's the best I could do with what I had at the moment)

What sort of genetic disorder do these characters suffer from that their fists are as big as their heads? And their calves are thicker than their thighs? And their heels are wider than their knees? I hate the way these models are distorted. It's aesthetically unpleasing even without all the muddy browns and greys that come with uninspired visual design.

If you heavily retool UE3, like Bioware did with Mass Effect, you can get something approaching a good-looking engine. But for the most part I can't really stand UE3.

A friend just pointed out to me the similarities between Rob Liefeld's artwork and the Gears of War models.  An apt comparison.

Pretty sure you're talking about the game's artistic design rather than the engine there, sportsfan.

damn, fair point, i was goin into unknown territory there. though, considering the series, there'll be a fair bit of funding, and they might delay it (might? :-P) to update the software. i'd imagine they'll try to make the best of the situation they're given, considering the amount of people who, upon just hearing about it, think it'll be a failure, none of you doubters thought giving it a chance might pay off?
