I'd just like to add, The Orange Box is a must-have for PC gaming if you don't already own Half-Life 2. For $40 USD you get Portal, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, Peggle Extreme (a 10 stage Peggle demo, which itself isn't a very deep game but it's a fun 20 minute diversion.) and the Source SDK (including a map editor, model viewer, and system for making lip sync and action scripts for the games' character models).
Plus you get access to literally dozens of completely free games built around the Source engine. (There are a lot out there that aren't hosted through Steam, as well.) One really popular one is Garry's Mod; you can take full advantage of the engine's physics system by building anything you want. Version 9 is free, but version 10 is a gigantic step forward for the $10 price.

I can recommend the Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episodes 1 and 2 on Live Arcade if you don't want to spend too much cash.
Cyanin:
hmmm, penny arcade, read the comic and wondered what the game was like, any good?
Blademan:
If you liked the comic, you'll probably like the game. I wound up playing Episode 1 in one straight session, but I still haven't gotten around to Episode 2, what with finals and all.
