Horrible bands that time forgot
« on: 18 Nov 2008, 14:12 »

IIT: We discuss bands that are incredibly bad and (maybe for that reason) had nothing resembling a following or any lasting success.

To start things off with a bang, I present to you: S.T.U.N., or Scream Towards The Uprising Of Nonconformity.

Imagine a band from Los Angeles. Imagine a band that sounds like a sterilized, corporate-rock pastiche of Rage Against The Machine and Refused, claim the influence of Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, and have lyrics dumber than your average punk band's. Imagine a band that claims to be all revolutionary and anti-capitalistic and yet signed to a major label. Imagine an even worse version of Manic Street Preachers' The Holy Bible (rotting punk riffs paired with kneejerk sub-Situationist "smash the system!" jackoff prose) and you'd have STUN.

If you were to take a look at their lyrics, you'd notice that they really don't get any more insightful or deep than "The people that make the laws and rules for us?/They don't give a fuck about us". How the hell Geffen Records thought they could make a buck off of pseudo-political fake punk is beyond me. They probably either scared off most listeners or ticked off their bullshit detectors, so thank goodness they didn't get past MTV's "Top Ten Artists To Watch in 2003" list.

Now, you do it!

This is a band called The Bravery. Way back when 80's fetishism was first becoming a big thing in the early-mid aughts the Killers and the Bravery proceeded to have one of the weakest music feuds in history. The Killers ended up dropping the synths for the most part and started aping Springsteen instead of New Order (sort of like a poor, dumb man's Hold Steady) while the Bravery faded into obscurity. Some blame the fact that a few of the members were previously in a band called Skabba the Hutt.

S.T.U.N., or Scream Towards The Uprising Of Nonconformity.
Scream towards?

I'm not usually a grammar nerd, but my god, that's bad.

Scream in the name of?

Scream at (as in anger grr)?

Scream in the direction of?

The mind, it boggles.

Getting a boner of the Red White & Blue is essentially getting a boner for Jesus.  This visual should illustrate nicely:

How about pretty much all mainstream late-nineties alternative rock? Vertical Horizon, Semisonic, Eve 6, Harvey Danger, Nine Days..... makes shit like The Bravery look revolutionary.

Like the rest of the bands listed by tuna, Harvey Danger was a one-hit wonder, but that hit rang out across the airwaves for months, years even. I know, I grew up listening to 105.9 (ALICE!) out of Denver in the late 90's and they played the same 25 or so songs over and over and over. Remember The Verve Pipe's "The Freshmen"? Remember Fastball's two hits? Remember Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy"? What about the ever-ubiquitous Smash Mouth? Remember Joan Osborne's "One of Us"? Hey, Third Eye Blind got a lot of airtime as well. I remember all of these bands. Sometimes I wish I didn't. I have friends who still swear by Marcy Playground and Semisonic, but I never really cared for them.

I guess the one band of that ilk that's still kicking to some extent would be Nada Surf, who had a hit in the 90's and came back a few years ago as an indie act, and they got some fairly good press and are well liked, as far as I know.

Is this that band with the song that was like 'come my lady come come my lady, you're my butterfly' or something like that?

And I like some of those 90's bands  :|

Except for the Joan Osborne song, I listened to pretty much the same stuff in junior high. My only-see-him-at-thanksgiving cousin actually used to work at Alice, so my mother would have that on sometimes. I actually have a fastball song in my napster library, not sure when I got it, or what it is. Either way, I am somewhat ashamed of my listening habits from those days, I listen to 103.5 when I am listening to the radio now.

The king of all those irrelevant 90s alterna-rock bands is Deep Blue Something.

Yeah.

You know, that one band.

You know, that one band that did that song that went "And I said, what about Breakfast at Tiffany's..."

To further add to the list, here's Loudermilk.

A band that dressed like The Strokes and sounded like Smashing Pumpkins. Go figure. They broke up a while back then reformed as the more indie-friendly Gosling, which no one still cares about.

they were unbelievably shit, but they did have ONE good song.  they did a single called "Drowning" and i thought, for a commercial pop-metal song, it wasn't THAT bad.  bombed though, and they split up shortly afterwards if i remember rightly.

in a similar vein, what about OPM?  "heaven is a halfpipe" anyone?!

Someone doesn't pay much attention. They are a subscription service now, I think I must have gotten it when I added a daily playlist to my library, must have liked most of the songs they had on there.

Was the rerun of top gear the one with the morning of stars in a reasonably priced car? I saw that one a few days ago.

i think oasis are one of those bands who aren't THAT bad, but the huge (IMO-)undeserved success they've had, along with the fact that every twat and his dog will claim them as their favourite band ("oh champagne supernova, this is MY SONG!" fuck off you drunk bastards!), just sours the fact and makes them appear shite.

i like a few of their songs, but not enough to ever want to buy or even bother downloading.  they do however, need to fire that twat of a lead singer and let his brother (an infinitely better vocalist) do the singing.

What about the ever-ubiquitous Smash Mouth?

Hey Fush Yu Mang was a superb album and AstroLounge wasn't bad either (excepting "AllStar" which I swear to god I will fucking kill somebody if they sing it at karaoke). I still listen to those two albums pretty regularly.

I am pretty sure Led Zeppelin's old road manager did the same job for Crazytown. Talk about lifelong failure, the only good band he ever had a long stint working for now hates him for being a lying bastard (fuck that book he wrote about Zeppelin), he wound up losing tons of money to drug addiction, and then he worked with the "Butterfly" guys. Oh, Richard Cole, you were never useful for anything but as a corpse to get in the way of a bullet possibly headed for Jimmy Page.

Fush Yu Mang was a pretty rad ska-punk album. I think it was also the first CD I'd ever bought.

Guys, remember Staind? Because they were "local", the big radio stations seriously used to play them EVERY FUCKING THIRD SONG. I'm not making that up.

I remember the major labels and A&R people making massive waves about this dude -

Of course, he totally fell off the radar after just one album.

i love his music, but that's fucking funny!

to be fair though, that album of demos from after he died is pretty mint.
