QC Listravaganza 2008!

(1/17) > >>

michaelicious:
So it's December again which means it's time to start finalising your lists so you can post them in list threads on the internet that no one reads! I thought it was appropriate to start a new thread because it would just be more special this way.

I thought we could do something fun and instead of just listing your top 10 albums, list other things too! Mine are pretty uncreative, but feel free to be as creative as you want. I ain't buggin'.

My year in lists:

Top 10 Albums:
1. Parts & Labor - Receivers - "Fuck yeah, motherfucker!" are pretty much the only thoughts that cross my mind when this album is playing. Adding Sarah Lipstate on guitar was a smart move. Every song is anthemic and noisy and amazing. This album sounds like it is from the future.
2. Women - Women - Probably one of the best debut albums I have ever heard. This album is weird. It's got poppy little gems like "Group Transport Hall" then when you start to get comfortable they get all US Maple like "January 8th". These dudes pretty much killed live too.
3. Times New Viking - Rip It Off - I know some people can't seem to get past how lo-fi this album is, but once you get used to having tinnitus this album is amazing! This album is so catchy and emphatic and sincere and wonderful from start to finish.
4. Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea - I think this is my new favourite Jews album. It's so well put-together and they seem like they are having a lot of fun!
5. The New Year - The New Year - These jerks never disappoint me. Another beautiful, understated record from the Messrs. Kadane.
6. Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane - Chad VanGaalen has always made interesting albums, but this is his first album that is a truly great album. It's focused and well-paced and most of these songs are catchy as hell.
7. Laura Barrett - Victory Garden - This album is so strange and inviting. The main istrument is the kalimba! That might seem like it's gimmicky but no way, man. Laura plays it with such skill - you might even venture to say virtuosity - that it's never boring. Her voice is dreamy and comforting like a lullabye.
8. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Lied Down in the Light - I don't wanna live to see the day when Will Oldham releases an album that doesn't make my top 10.
9. Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer - I never thought that this album would make my list because I kinda hated it at first. I am glad because there was a time in my life when I would have said Wolf Parade was my favourite band.
10. Futureheads - This Is Not the World - A lot of people didn't like this album, but fuck them. This album is great! It's catchy, the guitars sound awesome, some of the songs sound like classic Futureheads while others move forward to a poppier direction.

Patrick:
I don't think I have enough music from this year to make a top 10. I AM NOT FEELING VERY LOVED HERE.

spoon_of_grimbo:
i don't get the amount of people saying that 2008 was a bad year for music, or they've not heard anything they like (not necessarily you guys that have posted, just in general, from who i've spoken to and seen posted on other forums).  personally, i've been spoiled for choice this year.  i'll post a few lists on here tomorrow if i get a chance, i'm about to head out atm.
