Top (Metal) albums of 2008 because I hardly listen to listen to anything besides metal, in alphabetical order by artist and also including my parenthesized opinions of each:

After the Burial - Rareform (8-string guitars play polymetric metal with hardcore influences)
Archons - The Consequences of Silence (somebody's been listening to Quo Vadis...)
Arsis - We Are the Nightmare (better than United in Regret, not as good as A Celebration of Guilt or A Diamond For Disease, but still really solid)
As Eden Burns - The Great Celestial Delusion (shredtastic but still tasteful Lone Star melodic death)
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery (one of the more solid brutal death releases from this super group)
Before the Dawn - Soundscape of Silence (great progressive melodeath)
Cynic - Traced in Air (CYNIC)
Daylight Dies - Lost to the Living (makes you sad and stuff)
Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds (holy shit tech-death release of '08)
Eluveitie - Slania (makes me feel like I'm at a metal renaissance festival)
Embrace the End - Ley Lines (tech metal with heavy punk/hardcore influences)
Evergrey - Torn (better than their previous - super solid prog/power/groove/gothenberg)
The Faceless - Planetary Duality (amazing tech-death concept album about inter-dimensional beings)
Fellsilent - The Hidden Words (polymetric Meshuggah worship with more melody)
Genghis Tron - Board Up the House (best electrogrindcore (yeah i made this label up) album of 08? yessir)
Gojiria - The Way of the Flesh (groovy french metalles)
Hour of Penance - The Vile Conception (my favorite brutal death album is from these italianos)
Keep of Kalessin - Kolossus (best progressive black metal album about battling gods of '08)
Mirrorthrone - Gangrene (best one-man-band release this year - sounds like there's twenty people playing stuff at once)
Misery Signals - Controller (probably my favorite-est album of 08 - i uploaded this in the mediaf!re thread along with my semi-extended views on this)
Moonspell - Night Eternal  (best black/gothic album, 'Scorpion Flower' is probably  the catchiest song I've heard this year)
Opeth - Watershed (OPETH, complete with jammin organ solos)
Prey for Nothing - Violence Divine (best Israeli melodic death debut album of 08)
Septic Flesh - Communion (best 'I've never heard this band before this album but this shit is awesome' album of the year - super atmospheric greek metal)
Serpentcult - Weight of Light (female fronted DOOM. I think they tune to F# or something. Makes your hair stand up from being so low)
Stormlord - Mare Nostrum (best nautically themed metal album)
Textures - Silhouettes (if meshuggah actually put songwriting first and we're really good at it, this is what they would sound like)
Veil of Maya - The Common Man's Collapse (groovin rifftastic polymetric album of 08)

I forgot that possibly the best show I saw in '08 was at the Church of Paul the Apostle in NYC where Gavin Bryars' "Sinking of the Titanic," John Adams' "Christian Zeal and Activity" and Johnny Greenwood's "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" were performed (the latter most in its American debut). It was a pretty much perfect show. It was also my introduction to "Sinking of the Titanic" which was mesmerizing live, especially since the old church pews were creaking as people moved and shifted slightly in their seats, adding to the whole effect (conjuring a sinking ship) in an incredible way. "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" was brilliant as well. At one extended point all the violinists and violists held their instruments like guitars and strummed away with incredible intensity, the most unusual yet coolest use of pizzicato I've ever seen. I've never seen an orchestra used to such an effect in person before. Witnessing the transformation of a group of acoustic instruments into a gorgeous, humming, mechanical sounding white noise machine is a pretty fantastic experience to be sure.
