cheesey metal that you can't help but loving
« on: 09 Dec 2008, 13:14 »

i myself am not hugely into metal, i mainly listen to a lot of Twee Pop and general Indie Rock
splitting off into a bunch of other things, but enough about that, but theres always room in my heart for cheesey metal.

especially like the band

TURISAS
finnish metal. Battle Metal to be correct. a bunch of finnish guys running around clan in viking outfits, singing about battles and viking life.
plus its metal with an accordian. really, theyre quite cheesey and over done by a lot. but one cannot help but loving.

anyone else got a soft spot for a cheesey metal band?

I can't decide whether I want to be the guy who posts a giant picture of Manowar, or the guy who replies "Manowar is serious business."

Turisas are pretty sweet, but if you haven't listened to Finntroll you must do it now because they are pretty much Turisas but better.

also Manowar.

Finntroll is alot less cheesy if you listen to them while wandering through a rainforest, frying on mushrooms.

then it becomes serious business.

Turisas and Finntroll ain't cheesy.  Rhapsody, Symphony X, Dragonforce, etc., that's cheesy.  Turisas are just fuckin' rad.  You don't like them ironically like you do the others.

and they did it before Turisas.  :-D </smugness>

How about Falconer? Most noticeable at the beginning of the title track of Northwind.

Oh, and everything Graveyard BBQ does is pretty much the definition of cheesy.

Rhapsody does cheesy power metal better than about anyone I've heard.  Though some Blind Guardian is quite excellent.

And to be fair, black metal dudes haven't worn corpsepaint much since the early 90's, iirc, at least in Norway (Immortal accepted).

At least some bands today still do it, at least for pictures. All of the ones I have seen are ones I had never heard of though. Excepting that one band, what were they? All of them were young, really fat kid singing, female guitarist, seemed to be a parody of black metal? Hard to tell on that last bit, though. Sometimes I wonder if all the black metal elitism is one huge joke, tongue held firmly in corpse-painted cheeck.

but isnt every genre?
the metal genre is just more humourous when analyzing it.
because everything with them is so over the top and absurd theatrics.

I don't mean stage presence and entertainment and the like. I mean over-the-top circus theatrics. Most contemporary metal considers itself serious business, but Norwegian Black Metal is almost like /b/ in it's ironic ridiculousness.

Man, what. Blind Guardian is the best power metal that isn't Persuader. And Persuader are basically just an improvement on Blind Guardian.

But I guess BG are less cheesy than Rhapsody, so qualify less for this thread.

GWAR's music resembles punky hard rock more than metal, really.

That's from a well-known series of pictures with those dudes baking cookies or vacuuming and such. Oh, here it is:

http://www.unwesen.de/v/Humour/Black+Metal+ist+Krieg.html

Black metal isn't a joke. Not much metal is. It's self-aware, but not as such a joke. Part of the thing about metal is that it should be possible to either take it completely seriously, or not at all seriously. Often both at the same time. It doesn't really operate in the same way as twee and all that crap. It's more like camp, I suppose.
