music/noise to torture people with...
« on: 29 Dec 2008, 12:05 »

In the Jon Ronson book 'The men who stare at goats' it was stated that Iraqi P.O.W's were subjected to continual looped, loud music as a form of interrogation. These included white noise, Metallica and childrens T.V. themes (Barney i love you song).

What songs/noise would you use?

i would use the barney song, twinkle twinkle little star, any x-factor contestant singing, babies crying, fire alarms, britney spears songs (any is a good choice) sexy back or like i love you by justin timberlake, crazy frog ( don't know if you have it in america but it was a ring tone available over here a few years ago) and any crapring tones, cheeky girls touch my bum, Tatu all the things she said, and country and western music/show band music

 can't think of anything else

DragonForce.

Or maybe Paramore.

Wait, no.  Creed.  Do a Google search for "worst band in the world" and you will get hits for Creed.

I read an article in (i think it was) Rolling Stone about two or three years ago about this.  It was used a lot in Guantanamo Bay.  Metallica, Disturbed, and Britney Spears were all favorites, as well as a lot of techno.

Perhaps the "bannana phone" song. Constantly, for days, I dread to think what will happen to people if they listened to that for more than a few hours.

Or just absolute silence, that might be worse, for days and days on end it might be enough to send people completly and utterly mad.

Sorry if the above are silly

I would too use that song to torture people, but personally I love it. I think it's a piece of beautifully ugly catharsis. Mostly because of the change in dynamic at the end when the guitar and bass drop out and it's just Henry saying 'And no-one comes in...' over the drumbeat.

The sound you get when your computer goes into a loop, just repeating over and over again.

Meshuggah. I like Meshuggah, but a day of it would probably drive me insane.

Scat Jazz would probably send me over the edge, too.

Any of those obnoxious top 40 songs - take your choice of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Panic! At The Disco, (too many to name).

You guys aren't trying hard enough.  Dissonance can be ignored.  These songs, just try and ignore them.  Literally years after hearing them once you can hear their choruses on infinite loop in your head-

"Don't Cry Out Loud" - Rita Coolidge

"Up Up and Away" - the Fifth Dimension

"It's a Small World After All" - The Walt Disney Company

"Afternoon Delight" - Starlight Vocal Band

I actually like most of those.

Something like Sculptured might be good for torturing people, as it's atonal, I like it, but I have less than mainstream tastes. Something with lots of feedback might work as well, if I had to listen to the opening of Limbs for hours on end, I might crack.

It heavily depends on the person, though, of course.

Hi, I like opening myself up to flames.

Even if people actually liked Merzbow, I think they'd agree it'd be a pretty effective method of torture.  I envision the act of actually choosing to listen to Merzbow a sort of masochistic spiritual self-laceration, or, perhaps just an exercise in contrarianism.

Also what the hell "Damaged I" is totally fucking brilliant. It's like opening up a dude's head and seeing exactly what's there for a few minutes.
