That is because California is too big. It still confuses me somewhat that LA and San Francisco are in the same state.

Same deal with Texas; I remember when I was 9 and my family drove there from MN to visit some family in San Antonio. It was like a 20 hour trip one way, and I think something ridiculous like 7 or 8 hours was actually within Texas itself.

I'm aware that I'm British and therefore doomed to be terrible at geography, but I am confused.
I just looked on a state map to see where these places are, and incidentally located Michicgan and Illinois.
Why are they called Midwest? Is New York in the west? Is California in the east? Why is this? I am confused.
