From the Hebrew name חַנָּה (Channah) which meant "favour" or "grace".
Uh, ok. I was named this so that I didn't have the exact same name as the aunt I was being named after. My cousin Anna was born a few months after me, so there ended up being a Big Anna and a Little Anna anyway, just with a Hannah in there to make it more confusing. Good work, relatives. I was going to be Elisabeth, but that would have made me Elisabeth Taylor, which would have gotten me teased in school a lot (apparently?). We found out later that my dad's grandmother was called Hannah, so there is a link back that way or something.
