Hey I heard that you can get a Nintendo game that has Fighter Jets and Ninjas. Like, ninjas in fighter jets.

I'm going to go to the Mall to read about it in Studio Cafe.

Hey guys I just invested most of my savings into the up-and-coming enterprise of MC Hammer!
But don't fear for in the unlikely case of the Hammer man not bringing home the bacon (meaning bringing money to me, to my house) I invested the rest of it in Vanilla Ice! He has a movie deal!

Anyone wanna trade yo-yo's? I just got a new yellow one and it has stuff inside that makes it come back up the string when it slows down, somebody called it a clutch but it doesn't seem to be as good a yo-yo as the one I got with a bearing ring in the middle that makes it spin for minutes.

Is the point of this thread that, as the naughties draw to a close, we are going to see an even stronger revival of the relevance of the 1990's in popular culture? Since we will have a generation of young people who only barely remember them, and we're already seeing a trend in fashion of a return to more casual clothing, specifically the outdoorsy, loose jeans/flannel wearing that characterized the early years of the decade, we can begin to expect to see 90's theme parties, possibly a return of grunge, and even more nostalgia for a generation past?

Daddy, why are we watching TV during dinner?
- Because a land just started throwing stones at another land.
What for, Dad?
- They say the man in the other land is mean but really they just want his stuff.
What stuff?
- It is called oil. You need it for cars and toys.
Okay.

I don't see 90's parties being anything beyond ironic (but then, I remember the 90's, so I don't really count?) but I think we've seen early 90's music start to make a sort of comeback. Hip bands of the last year have taken on a shoegaze-y element to them, haven't they? (Deerhunter comes to mind, but there have to have been others) A return to grunge or, say, industrial rock, I probably would not enjoy.

Considering that elements of grunge can be unmistakably heard in the odious corporate rock of today (we wouldn't have Creed or Nickelback without Pearl Jam!) I wouldn't bank on grunge making a return to the good graces of fashion. But I could be totally off.

Yeah, but I really doubt grunge's influence ends at Nickelback, Creed and Godsmack. Then again, I'm probably just bitter because I liked AIC and Badmotorfinger era Soundgarden. Plus, I also think Degradation Trip might have actually been a fairly decent album had Layne Staley still been alive, so I'm clearly biased as hell. Oh well.

Also, this thread mostly sucks and I think it's really obvious there's not many of us here old enough to really remember what it is we're making fun of.

Yeah, but as far as Grunge was founded as an opposition to the rock mainstream, I don't think a retro-version would be relevant anymore. When Grunge started, rock stations played mostly party songs and Grunge moved things more towards angst-ridden introspective moaning (not knocking it, I ate that shit up when I was 13). Now everything you hear on mainstream pop stations is angst-ridden introspective moaning, so what would be the point of a retro-grunge movement?

you, my dear, are not old as hell.

this nostalgia thing is always a bit strange to me, because i feel like there are way more people in the ohmannostalgia group than there should be. when i was in high school, it was all about 80s nostalgia. now, i love a good 80s power ballad as much as the next person, but i also recognize that i was born in 1984, so i was 5 when the decade officially ended. i am a child of the 80s in the sense that i was born in the decade, but the lifestyle and trends that represent the 80s were not really for me. most of the 90s are a bit before my reach even, but closer as far as the nostalgia bit goes. i know that times may have changed now, but honestly, when you were in second or third grade were you really all caught up on the latest music and fashion, or did you listen to what your parents had on the radio in the car and wear what your parents bought for you because it was on sale?

so here is what i think, because i know you all care, if you didn't make it to high school/teenage years in the decade in question, you are not a product of that decade. when the late nineties/early noughties nostalgia pops up, i'll be back for that maybe.

So I was 2 - 12 years old in the nineties, and all I remember about that decade that might be considered somewhat representative for it later on (besides the toys and games) is this:

Fuck the flanel, I didn't know what grunge was until it was over.

I can't say I really feel all that much nostalgia for the 90s even though I was a teenager during most of them. I wasn't really in to popular music besides the adolescent grungy period mentioned previously, and I never got in to popular fashion at all. If I wasn't in to it then, why would I be in to it now?
