Keep It Hid
« on: 04 Feb 2009, 14:12 »

Dan Auerbach, singer/guitarist of The Black Keys, has a new solo cd coming out! it's callled "Keep It Hid" and you can listen to the entire thing on his Myspace, if you're so inclined but i just checked Sordo and it looks like it's already out and about on the tubes for your stealing pleasure.

i've listened to the entire thing once through on his Myspace and i must say it's damn good. i'm downloading it right now so i can give it some more, proper listens but yeah, you should get it. naturally, i'm going to buy it when it comes out because The Black Keys are one of the few bands whose entire discography i actually pay for, and this (though not the Keys) is going to be no exception. i urge you to do the same, but i won't think any less of you if you don't.

so, to anyone else who's heard it, what do you think? better or worse than the Keys? thoughts/comments/concerns? additional information?

GO

edit: okay, i'm halfway through my second listen and hururgghgkdlkaaeee it is fantastic! get on it, people!

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Two things:

1) I am busy reading a really boring textbook, and thusly:

b) I am too lazy to look for it and want a link handed to me.

You probably could have typed Dan Auerbach into a search bar and clicked the first link that appears in half the time it took you to write that post.

for all the lazy fuckers out there:

not my link, but legit nonetheless. i'd upload it myself and put in the MF thread but my internet at work is too slow to upload things so this will have to suffice.

I kinda like this.  The singer reminds me a lot of the dude from Fleet Foxes, but they're playing much bluesier music.  Fleet Floxes + Dead Meadow = this?

I can't get much into Rubber Factory, but I love Chulahoma.  Is it anything like that?

Note: I do actually enjoy Rubber Factory, I just enjoy Chulahoma much more.

yeah, it's kinda Chulahoma-ee but with more acoustic-y stuff and also a couple songs with really sweet electric guitar riffs. there's even a quiet organ in one song.

and also, are Chulahoma and Rubber Factory the only Keys albums you've heard? if so, get all the other ones immediately. they are all fantastic but the style varies enough from album to album you don't really get bored. it's pretty interesting to listen to them in chronological order and see how they progress over time.

edit: also worth noting is that this isn't one of those albums where all the good songs are at the beginning and the stuff at the end is more or less negligable. some of the best songs are actually towards the end of the album, so it'd do you good to listen to the entire thing before making a real judgment about it, even if it means you find just one song you love and don't care about the rest.

double edit: @ Dimmukane (Sean? is that right?) have you not heard The Black Keys? you should definitely look into them if you like this cd; it's the same singer/guitar player with just one other guy (the drummer) and they have released like 6 cds over the years (five full-length), every one of them wonderful.

Yes, it's Sean.  No, I haven't heard The Black Keys' stuff before.  Yes, I will check them out soon.  Would you consider it to be good homework music?  I've got a bunch of research stuff to do this weekend.

i haven't done anything even remotely like homework for four years so i really couldn't say. i guess it would vary from person to person but for me, i can't concentrate on much of anything without having music to sing along to while i do it so...maybe? do you prefer calmish music or harder music to work to? their newest cd Attack & Release would be the former, while their second cd Thickfreakness would be closer to the latter, while everything in between would be...inbetween, i suppose.
