The mediafire discussion thread!
« on: 16 Feb 2009, 06:05 »

So, people don't talk about the albums in the mediafire thread enough.

Are there any albums/songs posted that you really liked?
Are there any you really didn't like?

If so, post about it here.

NB This is not a thread to request albums for posting in the mediafire thread. The no-request rule still stands.

I may as well start while i'm at it.
I really enjoyed that Winter Gloves album, nice cheery electro pop that reminds me of spring [which better come soon because its damn cold here now]. Also, the Brett Dennen album somebody posted was a great country-folk album in my opinion.

Wouldn't a separate forum, with specific threads for each album be MUCH more organized?

Wouldn't a Music Forum, where you can create a thread about any band or album be a good idea? By Golly i sure do wish someone made that forum.

well I'm currently listening to the new Dan Deacon album (Bromst) and while I didn't' get it from the thread it was recently posted there. So far I'm enjoying it quite a lot it seems a little less frantic/over the top than Spider-man Of The Rings. It's a bit on the long side perhaps but it doesn't get boring (at least IMO) I'd say if you enjoyed the last one chances are you'd enjoy this one.

So how about people start dscussing their opinions on music? There was a thread started about how someone didn't like Radiohead and within about 5 posts they were jumped on and told it was a stupid thread. It was a good idea for a discussion and luckily it has kept going. I just thought that people might like to make a comment on something they had an opinion of that they found out about through the mediaf!re thread.

EDIT: For example, i know 74 people have downloaded the Russian Red album i posted, what do people think?

right now i'm listening to the two Electric Lemonade Project cds that just got uploaded and they are really really good.

it pretty much sounds exactly like The Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson/whatever (so much so that i'm still not sure if it actually is them) except without the swearing and dirtiness. really clever and cute lyrics with catchy melodies and simple folky arrangements (mostly).

anyway, if you like any of that freakfolk/antifolk stuff (whatever that means), then you should definitely get those albums because you are guarunteed to like them.

Wouldn't a separate forum, with specific threads for each album be MUCH more organized?

For each album?  That would be a million times more confusing.  I'd guess that at least 5 or 6 different albums are posted every day.  So that equals tons of threads to go through, which no one would really want to do, and tons of wasted bandwidth on Jeph's part.

pulpfiction21 posted an EP from Swanton Bombs on p.131.  It's kinda dull stuff, the first three tracks, but not bad; the last song, tho, 'Vanishing Point', I think it's pretty amazing.

Also, whoever psoted The Shape of Jazz to Come, I'd been looking for that for forever.  The solo McCoy was nice, too

Guys. Lights at Sea. Holy shit. Michael was spot on with the drums. The drums on this record are so ace. The guitar work is a little been there done that but god the drums make up for that. Which make the guitar work feel that much better. This is really a great album for post-rock kids. Or drummers who dabble in post-rock.

Also I've spun a song off that Red Light Chamber Choir album which was really good. I'll talk about that later though. God too much music aaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Edit: okay I am spinning Lights at Sea again and wow, this record. While it is really nothing specail nor does it do anything new or exciting, something about it feels so warm and natural. I can't decide what, but it feels like such a welcoming record. God this is a great album.

Crossposted from the mediaf!re thread itself because it was at the bottom of the page and no one seems to read posts there that don't contain links to fifty albums anyhow:

I like how both of essplode'd posts have been Azeda Booth albums.  Maybe (s)he is in the band or something?

More than that, I like how Lunatica's only two posts have been requests that someone upload an album.

I like how mod_a has not posted outside of the mediaf!re thread.

EDIT: Also, Rubin, wespeakinmidi, Clapyourhandssaywhhaatt, bonbonpei, kaelling, andshewas, minus_the_david, probably more.  Many others have posted outside of the thread once or twice, often months and months ago.

Obviously this thread is great.

Search in the mediaf!re thread for "Inlander".

I've put a little jazz there too - search for "Free improvisation" and "Oscar Peterson" to find them.

I guess what I'm really saying is that I don't like that this thread is creating this weird community of people who seem to only be here for the free music.  I really think the thread should be run similarly to how the photo thread in the "Infinite Pony Debates", and be locked and halted every once and a while, and only restarted after a few weeks.  At this point I really don't think it's working as a way for people to just share and discuss their favourite music, as there really isn't any discussion.

There are lots of places on the internet where you can get all the free music you want.  Maybe I'm being crabby, but I don't think that should be the point of the thread.

This is true, most the albums that you find on the thread you can find somewhere else as well, but for me the thread is not so much a way to download albums by artists that I know, its a place to discover artists that i would never have found out about. That's the beauty of the thread, people sharing music that they enjoy by bands that arent plastered all over the internet for easy discover.

Cause yeah sure i could download "______" by _______ somewhere else on the internet probably, but not if I have never heard of them.

But then there is no discussion or whatnot of the music?  If you want the beauty of sharing bands, why not start a thread about the band, talk about their sound, post a song or two, get some discussion happening?

Hell, post the whole album if you want, but try and say something about it beyond a line or two.

But nowhere does that thread promise to deliver a discussion of the bands. Its not called the "Discussion of Bands, including a mediaf!re link to an album, Thread".

I do want the beauty of sharing bands, but not the beauty of people discussing the shit out of them.

Why would i care what other people have to say about a band? Just tell me what style of music they play and that's it. I form my own opinions and just want to have the album link and then i can form it.

And plus if we made a thread for each band that has been posted in the thread, there would be a clusterfuck of needless threads.

i remember asking around a bit if there was a way to hide the thread completely from non-members (like I Like Fish, or whatever it's called today) but i guess it didn't happen? i think Ben may have said he'd look into it but i don't think anything actually came of it. it was a while ago.

I'd agree, SWM (I feel like I should know your name, but I don't).  As it is right now, it is just really odd.

not me, thats for sure

This is the attitude that the mediafire thread as it goes now seems to fuel.  It is the attitude that I think is pretty shitty.

The_pied_piper, why is there a danger of clogging up the boards?  The great thing about message boards is that if a topic is bad and no on is interested, the topic quickly falls back a few pages and isn't heard from again.  If a topic about a band is popular, it can be informative and interesting.  There is no danger of running out of space on the board, so having some topics that don't go so well is fine.  The only way it could possibly generate any real clutter for the front page is if the thread sticks around.  If that happens, the thread is obviously popular, so pretty good thing it was created, eh?  This thread essentially just acts as a place for people to thank other people for free music.  Why can't this be done in the mediafire thread itself, if it must exist?  Because scrolling down a few extra inches to find your free music really sucks?

Face it, this discussion about the mediafire thread happening right now is the only real discussion that has taken place in this thread.

Maybe we should just have a thread for "Music Discussion".  Then we wouldn't have to have all those clutter threads like "Of Montreal" or "More Victor Villareal news" or "Mono - Hymn To The Immortal Wind" taking up space on the front page and distracting my eyes from the mediafire thread at the top.

Or we could just have a "Talk" thread, which could encompass every single post on the entire board.  Then there's no clutter at all!

my comment was sarcasm, as i do recognize that this is a discussion forum. That should have been obvious, why would i be involved in a discussion if i didnt want to discuss something?

Anyways, all im saying is that i like the mediaf!re thread the way it is.

Just an opinion guys, no need to start an argument about it.

If a person finds the need to discuss a band, they can sure as hell start a thread for it. there is no stopping them. but obviously not a whole lot of people wanna do that. So let that be.

Here is a really awesome thread that Darryl started about a band he thought people should hear.  Look at all that information he wrote about the band, without taking big long quotes!  Look at the articles that were linked to!  Weren't they nice and informative?  I listened to the band because through Darryl's posts and his involvement in the QC community, I've felt that I've gotten to know him somewhat, and as such respect him and his taste.  I thought that if he put that much effort into telling a forum consisting mostly of strangers about a band, he probably felt pretty strongly about them.  And the band turned out to be pretty good!

The topic soon drifted towards other things, but it continued to be filled with opinion and discussion.  I only came upon this thread recently, since I wasn't posting a whole ton around the time the thread was created, so I missed it initially.  Maybe I'll try to revive it later.

That was a pretty cool thread.

Sure would suck if there were other similar ones.

I aim in my uploads to the mediaf!re thread to present stuff which most people here wouldn't go looking for, or even pick out if it was in a separate thread; I aim to say enough to catch people's interest, but without invoking a tl;dr reflex.  Because these offerings are mixed up with the others, people happen on them, and continue to do so as their slowly increasing count of downloads indicates.  The occasional messages I get about them confirm that this works to some extent, and I'm sure that a different structure would not work better, or even as well from my point of view.

In the rare event that a real discussion of an upload gets under way, there is an argument for having it separate, though (i.e. typically in this thread).

This thread was not designed for general discussion but discussion of albums posted to the mediafire thread. Hence, the mediafire discussion thread. You want to make a thread about a band go ahead, whatever you want to do but people were complaining there was no discussion of mediafire items posted so i started this thread.

It was supposed to be for people to say well, i liked this album better than this one or something of the like but people didn't seem to get that part of it. However, now you know so hopefully people will start discussing the albums posted rather than the thread itself which had a referendum not long ago and was deigned to be as is [it was cleaned up however as almost all dead links from the earlier albums should be gone].

There is also the search function if you think something should be there and you can't be bothered searching.

so, the thread, what have you guys been hyped on lately?

me? well, on a whim, i downloaded that Pet Genius album on the current page yesterday and i haven't stopped listening to it since! i haven't listened to much rock music lately because usually it bores me unless they do something unique and sweet, and Pet Genius are definitely unique and sweet. it's like garage rock with a twinge of psychedelia and even some heavy, semi-sludgy stoner-rockish guitar parts that are super sick (without ever being slow or boring). i can't enough of it.

personally, my favorite tracks are "The Visiting Dynamiter," "Float My Boat," and "Man Of The Mountain."

i recommend that everyone at least check it out (espescially the songs i mentioned above) because, hey, what have you got to lose? also, i recommend it extra hard to anyone who likes Vampire Hands (another fucking sweet band i discovered through the MF thread).

I'm glad you liked the album SWM. The tracks that you posted are 3 of my favorites too, along with "Doomsday".

I'd never listened to Cursive before, but that new album is pretty rad.

Double posting because:

Can we amend the rules to force mp3s only? I know some of us are on OS X and can't open .wma, and some of us are on Windows and can't open .m4a. It's a fucking hassle sometimes, and a real pain in the ass.

Backtracking a bit, I'm sad that the Cursive upload is missing the final track. I feel like I'm missing something good!

Install Videolan VLC media player.  It is fully cross-platform (binaries for 16 platforms and source for 7 more) and handles  on all platforms every codec you are likely to come across; it's also free and open-source.

I suspect that once installed its codecs are available to other players too, but I'm not sure about that - I have too many other things installed (e.g. Nero, which adds a lot of codecs to Windows) to be able to tell.
