The Engineer is the class that is the easiest to play effectively, but in general how effective you can be with a certain class is heavily influenced by the map you're on, since the map layout plays to classes' strengths and weaknesses. Maps with a lot of chokepoints play well for pyros, demos and heavies and are difficult for snipers and scouts, while wide-open maps are the opposite. There's a particular map, a control-point map (where there are 5 possible, you start off with 1 and have to capture the rest) in which you can rack up 40 or 50 kills minimum in a single life as an engineer just by placing your sentry in a particular spot, making it an unavoidable defense of the control point, one that's invulnerable against everything but ubered enemies (which itself should be a problem with a good coordinated defense)

Finally got all my new toys last night.
Then just played an engy in weird ways because the server/team I was on had 6 fuckin' snipers and 3 spies. It was absurdly fun, though. No one expects an engy to pop out of nowhere and shotgun them to death.
Anyone get a hat yet?
