More Victor Villareal news
« on: 02 Mar 2009, 01:20 »

Earlier this month I posted that Victor was releasing his new solo album, Memories Alive. Well, it's finished, and he's ordered the CDs. He'll be distributing them himself. It's 10 songs long and all acoustic singer/songwriter.
Here's the new song on Youtube:

If that doesn't wet your whistle, you'll also be interested to know that Ghost and Vodka have reformed. This is insanely exciting because Sam and Victor's individual playing styles have evolved so much since Precious Blood that they're going to sound totally different, but totally amazing. Here's hoping they write and record some new material!

Unfortunately the Youtube video is no longer up, but this is definitely going on my list of records to get. Ghosts and Vodka is good news too. Zurick and Villareal are two of my favorite guitarists.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

There's a new recording of the second song on youtube, this is a MUCH better take. Both songs are really great. Earlier this week he was "working on the artwork" to send to the production plant. I think at this rate, it'll arrive mid April.
On a slightly related note, the new Joan of Arc record leaked yesterday. Similar sounding to Boo Human, but with long instrumental passages instead of lyrics about Tim's former spouse. Some genuinely great tracks, and it's missing the bits that made Boo Human! a disappointment. Really nice crowded arrangements and Theo is a great drummer. The first listen has me thinking it's the best since 2004s Dick Cheney/Mark Twain (though that admittedly wouldn't take very much).

Wow I didn't even know there was a new JoA in the works.

I'm pretty pumped on this.

There is always a new JoA record in the works. Do you not understand how this works yet?

This leaked yesterday after the first batch he mailed out arrived. It's exactly what you'd expect from a stripped back Victor Villarreal album. Solo acoustic guitar with occasional suggestion of his old bands. Some occasional double tracking and a little (much needed) polish on the vocals. Terrible album artwork. Cheesy (but sincere) lyrics. Some of the guitar parts would sound just as good the older bands if they were played that way, which has me excited for the (confirmed) G&V reunion.
If you're expecting it to sound like anything other than a bare and stripped back singer/songwriter album then you'll be very disappointed.
Buy it through the Joan of Arc website, the purchase is forwarded directly to Victor.

I that G&V was now Owls. I mean, isn't it the same people? Or am I confusing the timeline again?

The guitarists from G&V were the bassist and guitarist in Owls and caP'n jazz. Shared two members, totally different band with a completely unique sound.

Some of the same people. Ghosts & Vodka was/is Victor and Sam from Cap'n jazz (plus two other cool dudes) and and Owls was everyone from Cap'n Jazz minus Davey.

Edit: Yeah. What D-Money said. Someone should make a flow-chart/thunderdome.

I'm not doing it. That's at least eleven releases from the four founding caP'n jazz members alone.

Who would think so few people could make so much music and that absolutely none of it would be at all interesting?

Also Tim Kinsella produced the last two or three Chris Connelly albums which were released on David Tibet's record label.

Chris Connelly is mildly interesting. Kind of a poor mans Scott Walker who used to be in Ministry. Hardly one of my icons.

It's still a profoundly boring collection of records though. I did buzz through it all on last.fm before making this assertion.
