Hangovers!

--- Quote from: Hat on 11 Mar 2009, 02:03 ---That said, I have been told that there is no actual reason why some alcohols would cause a hangover over others if they aren't just brewed in a bathtub, however I will always get more hungover on beer or red wine. Other people have related similar problems, but for every person that agrees, another person will have another type of alcohol that specifically gives them a hangover. Honestly, just follow the preventative tips I talked about above and it shouldn't be a problem anyway.

There actually are reasons that certain alcohols cause worse hangovers. Cheaper commercial liquor has not been distilled as many times and therefore has a higher methanol content (There's no way to completely eliminate methanol from ethanol, but you can certainly lower the amount in the alcohol). Darker varieties (like whiskey, scotch, etc.) get a lot of their flavor from the wood barrels they're aged in, and some of the compounds that they can pull out of the wood do not play nicely with your body.
For me, the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink a whole bottle of gatorade combined with a few tylenol or advil the night I was drinking. Sugar adsorption by the intestines will actually drive water uptake, so gatorade will hydrate you better than just plain water. I don't drink more than a bottle before I got to sleep, both because too much liquid can make you throw up. The next morning it's all greasy food and more gatorade, sometimes with some pepto if I'm feeling especially crappy.

Some people would like you to believe that confession has that effect.

I've been told (and tried it myself), that greasy-ass food is best for hangovers.

You know I've tried to do that, but I just ended up eating about a quarter of it before it became disgusting

i can't speak for everyone, but personally when i drink i don't purposely aim to get sick and end up with a hangover. again, when i get them it's pretty rare but usually it's more to do with the fact that i happened to stay up late and gradually drink a lot throughout the night without realizing it cos i was having a good time with people i like, and less to do with sitting down and deliberately taking shot after shot in an attempt to give myself alcohol poisoning. sometimes they just sneak up on you, it happens.
