The Allman Brothers Band - Live At Fillmore East
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
The Beatles - Abbey Road
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
Bob Dylan  - Highway 61 Revisited
Klmit 1918 - Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Metallica - Master Of Puppets
Tom Waits - Blue Valentine I EDITED THIS ONE IN! Stupid alphabet.
Mono - Hymn To The Immortal Wind (does it count if it hasn't actually been released yet? Because it'd better...)

Oh fuck I'm out of nominations but it'd be unfair to these albums to be cut because I did it by alphabetical order so I guess they stay. Sorry Neil Young (you were next with Live Rust

Shit, I keep hitting the quote button instead of the modify button. Oh well. Other post deleted, count this one.

OK so to begin with I was dead against the "more than one album per band" thing but then I realised that there were going to be 64 albums in this competition so it shouldn't be such a big deal.

Although if the competition is dominated by a few bands then I reserve all right to bitch and say I told you so.

I just realised that nobody (including myself) has yet nominated Graceland by Paul Simon, so in a flagrant abuse of the rules of this thread I hereby present you with my 11th nomination:

Paul Simon - Graceland.

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
NMH - In the Aeroplane over the Sea

Yeah but it's Graceland.

That's WHY it wasn't nominated.

I've been crunching the numbers on this thread, and it seems to me that with a field of 64 entrants any albums going to need, at the moment, at least three nominations in order to qualify.

Interestingly, no Joy Division or Fugazi album currently meets this requirement.

Not many albums seem to at the moment. NMH's "...Aeroplane..." does for sure but not a huge number seem to qualify just yet.

Hey guys, it'd really help me if you format your picks like so: BAND-ALBUM, without a space between the dash. Excel's a bitch when it comes to spaces and sorting. Manually deleting spaces to get the sorting right is a pain in the ass.

No need to edit your post if you're above this message; I have everything captured thus far.

Thanks!

ALSO, just to give some initial numbers, there are 351 albums by 272 artist nominated. 88 of those albums have been nominated at least twice.

Question: have you been doing a running entry as we post our nominations, or did you just compile the list now?

I ask 'cause I your rules say that we can edit our nominations, so I was under the impression the list wasn't going to be compiled until the 23rd.  Subsequently, I altered some of my albums about 2 days after my initial post (posted on the 16th and edited on the 18th).  So, if my nominations were entered on the 16th or 17th, they're not what I wanted my final nominations to be.

I'm going to go through my (relatively) limited library and pick out some of my personal favourites (in no particular order).

Graceland gets a special mention, as it is the album that I grew up with.

Paul Simon-Graceland
The Beatles-Abbey Road
Bob Dylan-Blood on the Tracks
Cat Stevens-Tea for the Tillerman
Explosions in the Sky-The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place
Fleetwood Mac-Rumours
Iron & Wine-Our Endless Numbered Days
Pearl Jam-Ten
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
The Who-Tommy

Crap, I'm at 12. The two I removed were Mogwai's "Mr Beast" and Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow".

Sorry for the triple-post, but here's the link to the old battle of the bands.

Since that one was done exclusively through the Quiki, I'm going to make my own rules as far as how albums get seeded. Here's what I have so far:
  • There will be four "brackets", just as in any normal competition.
  • The albums with the most nominations will be seeded #1 and be placed in each quadrant counter-clockwise, starting from the upper-left.
  • Albums will continue to be seeded based on number of votes, moving counter-clockwise to fill in the bracket. In the event of a tie, I'll place them alphabetically.
  • When I get further into the list, there's bound to be a number of albums with 3 or 2 votes each. In including those albums, I was thinking that the number of copies sold would determine that; however, I can't find any website that gives those statistics. (I looked at Wikipedia, All Music and RIAA.com) Any suggestions? If a band has multiple albums nominated, but one album multiple times, I'll pick that over an album that is nominated the same number of times but no other nominees from that band. Does that make sense?
  • When the bracket is complete, I'll post it here. The way voting will work is you'll vote for your favourite album in each match-up. So in Round 1, you'll give me 32 albums. I'll tally all those, determine the winners of each matchup, fill in the grid more, then round 2 will start. You'll give me 16 albums, and we'll do the whole thing over again until one album has won. I'm terrible at graphic-design, so I'm going to hand-write all this and scan it in.

I'll continue to update everyone on how this is going to work. Wooo! (2.5 hours left to nominate.)

Shouldn't it be clockwise, so that the 1st and 2nd seed have the top two corners? This way, if the favored album wins every time, the final match up is #1 vs. #2.

The only place where I can think of to find sales information of that kind is Billboard.com, but to get that level of detail on things not on the current charts, you would need a paid subscription.

This seems about as fair as any other tie-breaker would could come up with really. It does reward more prolific bands over bands that had one stand out hit, but I think we can live with this. If something only managed 2 nominations, that's hardly a mandate as one of the great masterpieces of our time. And given the choice, I'd rather see some recognition given to bands that have steadily put out good work. Also, this might counteract some of the affect of people trying to avoid nominating the same band more then once, even though more then one album by the same band might have otherwise made there lists.

Good point on the clockwise; I didn't think about that. I also looked at Billboard, but it didn't give me what I wanted. (Also, I'm assuming it's just an American list. I'd've done world-wide sales if the statistic was there.)

Nominations are now closed.

So by my count, everything with at least 3 nominations should make it, and there will be 16 albums in the contest that received only 2 nominations.

Maybe it's a better album

On a different note, I am surprised the jazz music is being represented rather well, considering that two of the choices are going against Bob Dylan

Yeah, the two Dylan vs. Jazz people races are practically dead heats. I am surprised by this, to be honest. I would have predicted Dylan winning those pretty easily. I'm actually a bit surprised Public Enemy is creaming Black Moth Super Rainbow. I just posted all the current standings in the voting thread (will post it here if people want) and it's 18-8, which is pretty significant. I'm just surprised since I've seen a lot of praise for BMSR around here at various points. Lets see...I'm sad that MONO won't be moving on and I'm interested to see how the Mogwai vs. Wilco race turns out. I had a really tough time choosing between the two and it's very close at the moment. Beyond that I think a lot of the current standings are fairly predictable. The races that are close are not all that surprising (Unicorns vs. Iron and Wine, Silkworm vs. Pixies and so on) and the ones where one album is destroying the other are generally not too shocking either. I am a bit surprised Boris is a hair over Modest Mouse though. I mean, Boris is cool and all but TLCW is incredibly brilliant and an album I wouldn't mind winning the whole shebang (among others, of course).
