I Need Glowstick Music
« on: 22 Apr 2009, 16:01 »

Alright, so here's the deal.  Summer is coming up, and some friends want to take me clubbing.  Thing is, I'm a shite dancer and I want to have a trial run (with the help of some tiny pills with little pictures on them, but that's not important.  I want music I can dance to sober or at least not necessarily on a serotonin rush).  So I need music for that.

Problem: There's a fuckton of electronic music, and I have no idea where to start.  I mucked around that one guy's 'Guide To Electronic Music', but I can't seem to find any style that stands out based on the samples he had.

Much of what I have right now is remixes and original songs by Soulwax or MSTRKRFT, and a couple other 'house anthems' such as that one song from Venture Brothers and stuff Eric Prydz wrote.  Also a Crookers remix of 'Day and Night'.  So basically I'm looking for stuff that's got a somewhat upbeat melody and some thick bass steaks.

With this in mind, I am not looking for the more disco-y stuff like Cut Copy, Justice, Daft Punk, etc.  In other words, slap bass is a no-no.  Also I don't really dig on trance-y stuff like Infected Mushroom or Shpongle.

So if anyone has any suggestions as to good music blogs for this or bands/songs similar to the stuff I found, I'd much appreciate it.

Deastro and Holy Fuck are the two best electronic bands of that variety I can recommend. That said, I'm interested to see what other people post, as I want more music like them.  :-D

Deastro, M83, and Holy Fuck

never heard of Deastro, Holy Fuck would probably work, though it's not really club music, but...M83? really? that's, like, the exact opposite of club music. unless, of course, he does some wacky techno shit that i haven't heard.

let's see...there are probably some tracks on the new Animal Collective album that would work too. EDIT: the last track "Brother Sport" is a definite must, now that i think about it. even i couldn't resist jumping around and shaking my ass when that song is playing and I DO NOT DANCE, EVER.

also, the song "No Use Crying Over (Some Techno)" from 65daysofstatic's new album Escape From New York would probably work, as well (everyone should just get that album right now anyway because it is fucking sweet).

I wouldn't call daft punk or justice "disco-y" and I never fucking listen to infected mushroom or Shpongle, but I'll do my best.

The Carl Craig sessions are pretty awesome, and provide an interesting "best of" for a seminal American artist . It's two disc, two and a half hours dj mix of some of his remix's and original tracks.

LCD Soundsystem (aka James Murphy and Co.) is always a solid bet. Both the self-titled and Sound Of Silver have excellent and completely danceable tunes. The entire albums may not be ideal for your 'e' adventure, but parts of them certainly.

For really fantastic "minminal techno" Ricardo Villalobos is fantastic, perhaps too "trancy" for your taste, but check him out. Anything of his really.

Hot Chip, Junior Boys both usually great.

start with some of those

Yeah, I added M83 as an afterthought, but then I thought again and went, "Wait. M83 is not club music at all. I just like them a lot." So I have rescinded them from the list. Holy Fuck and Deastro still stand, though.

Hallucinogen's "Twisted", if you really want to get tripped out.

Other than that, maybe some Chemical Brothers? "We Are the Night" might be their most straightforward techno-y dancey album ever. "Do it Again" is the song to look for.

I'd second Hot Chip, Junior Boys and LCD Soundsystem.

I'm not totally sure what you mean you're looking for, but I mean the premier gay 80s techno sounds can be found via the Human League and New Order.  I feel weirder and weirder about recommending Crystal Castles to anyone because they seem pretty terrible people, but the music they make is amazing so make your own decision. I dunno man. Annie? Basement Jaxx? Have you heard any of the Fabric compilations? Fabric and Fabriclive are a pretty excellent series of dj sets and you can find lots of them in the mf thread.

It's probably fifteen years old at this point, but the US version of Messiah's 21st Century Jesus is---for my money---the best straight-up techno album *ever*.  Basically, awesome breakbeats + awesome samples from the golden age of rave.

Temple of Dreams: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzR8YT6P3Sw
There Is No Law: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29CninNVtRY

Destroyer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scuz-hGR4h8
Thunderdome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dq4plrh7FE

To bad the UK version of 21stCJ has some dodgy mixes and their follow-up album was terrible.

Okay...when I said Daft Punk and Justice were disco-y, I meant in the slap bass, lots of samples from 70's-80's bands type of thing.  I guess I'm looking for stuff that does not use a lot of samples and uses synths and drum machines for most of their sound.

65daysofstatic is a song-by-song thing, depending on how post-rocky they get.  'The Distant Glow of Eastern Mechanized Dance Parties' (I know that's not right) is something I'd be able to dance to.

Hot Chip and Junior Boys never seem to get to a point where I'd consider dancing to them.  LCD Soundsystem is a little better at this.  Not all of their songs, but some of them (Daft Punk Is Playing At My House is more of what I'm looking for, although the Soulwax remix is better).  Deastro is a great dude, I love his music, but not really danceable.  I guess another requirement is that there is a lot of stuff going on/loudness?  A lot of what's been recommended so far is a bit more restrained than what I'm looking for.

That Animal Collective song kind of works.  I already have the Soulwax/Holy Fuck angle covered.  What's the difference between Fabric and Fabriclive?  I was under the impression that Fabriclive was all dubstep.

Also, the Health remix album is kind of working better than Crystal Castles, because it's got less screaming.

Maybe this is a better guide?  At least in terms of the kind of sounds used.  Stuff where the melody is modulated and faded and messed with.

I would call Daft Punk disco of a sort. I'm not really enamoured of the brand of cheese that they've spawned (MSTRKRFT, Justice etc.)

Anyway, Fabric is a good place to start. The nice thing about compilation albums / DJ mixes is that every track is a potential doorway to more music of its kind. Look for a song you like, and look up the artist. You might get lucky and find something you really like.

OK, this I guess is sort of part of my job.

To start I will just post a ton of stuff of several different styles, of you like any tell me and we'll narrow it down further.

This is Tiga, he is a dude from Montreal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw6k0kMVcCI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wq6W2Ln_Kg

This is Hercules and Love Affair. They are a thing from New York, they are mostly known for making new disco but they often have other sounds, like the second song which is a very Chicago House track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb8S51M2GAc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4x9XrMRjgQ

Ratatat are also from NY. They are a dude who is a pretty major session guitar player from mainstream acts and a dude who plays bass and laptop. I guess a way of describing them would be like wailing cockrock guitars BS hiphop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYCKGG4VOZY&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0VAkPjrnWM&feature=related

Chromeo are from Montreal too. It is like uhm, cheesy toungue in cheek gangsta electropop?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjI9WLG7Gr0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mc7ND4Qrd3I  This is a DJ mehdi song with them on it, it is more hip hoppish.

Crookers, they make some of my favourite dirty sounding electronic musics. They are prime glowstick music. Specially Love to Edit, the second track.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iCYeslMDg0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nyFq9X9pkE

Kraftwerk are a million years old and german but they are still pretty dang awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQdUZaUKKNM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2N2EAesfPI

Digitalism are also from germany, they are fans of that overcompressed synth that mstrkrft uses extensively

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiIX7QFrheQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwiwmUWjCN8

Mantronix are old school electro. They still sound awesome though some might say a bit dated
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcV4Rz-O2Ss
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY0S2Yb2WUQ

Simian Mobile Disco, SMD used to be a rock band and then broke up but one of their songs had been remixed by Justice and it became a huge hit and in the meantime two of the band members formed an electronic project which is based on simple but often heavily distorted synth and repetition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzNTCxOJK3g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8J4Qzt7sso

John mentions italo as coke music but in my mind they are always associated with qualuudes or some other sedative. See also: slow motion disco

To be honest, I'm not sure you want "glowstick music."   Granted, I haven't been to a rave in quite a while, but in my experience the only people who used glowsticks were candy ravers who listend to crap like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfSMOW3095k

Digitalism and Simian Mobile Disco are a lot closer to what I'm looking for.  I think it is the overcompressed synths.  Thanks, Emilio!

In the meantime I am hoping those Fabric albums are still up.

Klaxxons, CSS, Les Georges Lenigrad, Haudoken are all "New Rave"-y so I don't know if that's what you're after, but when I've seen them play there were a lot of glowsticks and dancing. I also like dancing to MIA but again that might be totally wrong.

I agree with Fabric comps. LCD sound system and pretty much all of  the reccomendations. Maybe try and find anything remixed by Paul 'phones' he takes a lot of indie guitar stuff and makes it dancey. Nice for bridging the gap on mixtapes to.

(I may add, I love dancing and do so whether drunk or not.)

Boys Noize,

and Underworld,

I came across this recently which I quite enjoyed:

I think I am really looking for more stuff that uses synths in the same way as the stuff I've posted.  I can't get any narrower than that, because I don't know enough about making electronic music to describe what it is they're doing, and to say that I want stuff that uses the same synths will probably give me way too many groups to sift through.  The MSTRKRFT remix of D.A.N.C.E. and a lot of the stuff on Most of the Remixes is a little more representative of those sounds.

I guess Electro House type stuff is kind of okay too?  I grabbed a compilation torrent and only liked about a third of what I heard, but that's more than I can say about any other particular genre.

You might be in luck. My brother's girlfriend's gay friend just got an apartment in New York, he decided that he doesn't want a whole box of house/techno/tribal CDs. The kid was a DJ and apparently knows some good dance music. So my question is, do you just want album titles or do you want actual uploads? I can do both, but the uploads might take a bit because I've only listened to two CDs so far.

Yeah, go ahead and do that.  Everyone's got schedules to keep, I'm not gonna hold you up while you wait for a response.  I'm working on a paper right now, anyways.

On a side note, I checked out some of the Fabric/Fabriclive stuff.  Most of the Fabric stuff seems pretty minimal, and the Fabriclive stuff seems geared towards hip-hop and whatnot.  I did like Fabriclive 41 (Simian Mobile Disco), I consider it to be more dancy than most of the Fabric stuff I've heard so far.  Are most of the Fabric albums as minimal as the first few, or do they vary a lot?

Oh yeah, i do want to mention this one. It is an LCD Soundsystem track remixed by Soulwax, it is not on Most Of The Remixes. It starts slow but it is a monster of a track

John's Addiction yes, Fake Blood not really, like I could see this awesome track play out from tiny parts and then it did something else entirely, which was frustrating.

I have that LCD Soundsystem track, and I love it.  And the Alan Braxe remix is pretty good.

I listened to Fabric 1 and 3, and listened to 41 from both, and Fabriclive 41 is the only one I liked.  Even then, it's still a little more restrained than the kind of stuff I'm looking for.  I don't think I have any 2manyDJ's stuff, I have Looking Up Evolution's Skirt and Radio Soulwax Live - Get Yer Yo Yo's Out, but I think those are both under the Soulwax moniker.

Looking Up Evolution's Skirt was actually done by me!

There are several Get Your Yo Yo's out sets, does the one you have begin with YMCA?

The Dewaele brothers also did a little side project (one of many) called Samantha Fu. I remember this track being huge last summer, in Belgium at least. I don't know whether they've done any more.

Carl Cox, Deadmau5, Glitch Mob, DJ Dan, Donald Glaude, Bloody Beetroots, Rabbit in the Moon, all play really dirty really heavy dance music. Most of that is straight house or progressive house, but it's all good if you like taking drugs and dancing.

Crookers were really really terrible when I saw them live. Like, horrendous.

Okay, let's start things of with some french house and we'll work from there.

Since you liked the d.a.n.c.e. remix by Braxe, a Braxe original
Alan Braxe & Kris Menace - Lumberjack
Braxe and Falke together are pretty much amazing, a bit more filter house though
Alan Braxe & Fred Falke - Intro
Epic synthy goodness by Falke
Fred Falke - Sanctuary
Classic French house, old school by now
Modjo - Chillin con carne (Por favor mix)
And some Lifelike for more synth on synth action
Lifelike & Kris Menace - Discopolis

Moving deeper into neo-disco territory via more Lifelike
Lifelike - So electric
College, founder of the Valerie collective, purveyor of smooth synths
College - She never came back (Outrunners remix)
Bit more synth-pop, part of Valerie
Anoraak - Nightdrive with you (Grum remix)
Australians are also pretty good at this synth-pop-disco thing
Bag Raiders - Nil by mouth (Knightlife remix)

Fellow Australians Cut Copy, remixed by the awesome Moulinex, getting a bit louder now
Cut Copy - Lights and music (Moulinex remix)
Moulinex remixing his D.I.S.C.O.Texas labelmate Xinobi (both connected to Valerie, starting to see a pattern here?)
Xinobi - Bmx (Moulinex remix)
Even more Valerie love with Russ Chimes
Russ Chimes - She's got the heat
Back to the Australians with Shazam
Shazam - Pool Party
And Bag Raiders in their own remix
Bag Raiders - Fun Punch (Bag Raiders remix)
And quickly back to France for Decalicious (with Kitsune I think, full time hipster label)
Decalicious - La Faviere 76 (Larsz Chaptier remix)

More bass via Kitsune's Autokratz
Autokratz - Stay the same
Firmly in club territory now
Joe and Will Ask? - Surge
Wait for the breakdown @ 3:55, brainmelting
Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler (Joakim Remix)
Fidget intermezzo
Foamo - Everything Cool
More love for the French
Yuksek - Tonight (The Krayz remix)
And finally...
The Toxic Avenger - Poker Face (Lies in disguise remix)

Hot Chip and Junior Boys never seem to get to a point where I'd consider dancing to them.

Clearly you haven't been listening to the right tracks, try these:

Junior Boys - FM (Tensnake remix)
Junior Boys - In the morning (Hot Chip Remix)
Hot Chip - Hold on (D.I.M. remix)
Hot Chip - Touch too much (Fake Blood remix)

Dude just find some classic italo comps.

they're not really glowstick music as much as they are cocaine music but whatever

Oh man, so true.

This isn't true Italo, but probably a bit more suited for this topic

Poni Hoax - Budapest (Joakim Italo dub)

Those are remixes, though.  When someone suggests a band to me, I go looking for their songs, not their remixes.  Is that the case with a lot of electronic music?  That the remixes are usually better?

I'm surprised that Benny Benassi hasn't been mentioned yet.  His stuff's pretty formulaic but if it's a flavor you like, you'll love basically all of it.

Honestly I like dancing to dubstep and Shpongle probably more than anything else so I'm probably not going to be of much use to you.

hot chip tune that get's pretty dancy and isn't a remix:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGfJ4shG4ak (2 min in is what I'm talking about)

I think the thing with hot chip is that, yeah they're electronic, but pretty relaxed at the same time. This lends to great remixes that are a lot more exciting.

No, I don't think so.  There are particular bods who've made their reputation on their remixes though - e.g. Carl Craig was one of the biggest names in the second wave of Detroit techno, still massively well regarded, and he said his remixes are the thing he's most proud of.

I'd say one of the key things about dance music is that, in all its flavours, it's about the singles.  The best artist albums tend to be compilations / best ofs.

Shouldn't come in here without a recommendation, I guess, but the kind of stuff you're rating upthread's not really my thing.  Heard MSTRKRFT or whatever remixing Armand Van Helden's NYC Beat?  I like that one...

May be quite different, but what do you think of Petter's Some Polyphony?  Can recommend a bunch of tracks along those lines if you like it.

Remixes aren't necessarily better than the originals. Most of the time the remix will be better suited for the dancefloor, but it all depends on the original material and the remixer.

Fish across face brings up a good point in dance revolving around singles. If you want to know what a band sounds like, you listen to their albums, with dj's or producers you listen to their singles. Most of the time they won't even have an album, and if they do it probably isn't very good. Now of course there are some exceptions to this rule, but it's a decent guideline.
