Canvas - Lost In Rock
(Household Name, 2000)
Much like Refused, Leeds' Canvas liked to include electronics or instruments like violins and weren't afraid to mess around with what you'd expect from a hardcore band. The big difference is that Refused were never anywhere near this heavy. Canvas dealt in crushing metalcore that had been twisted and fucked with until it was morphed into sprawling, wailing epics (several songs clock in at over 5 minutes and two at over 10, impressive for a hardcore record). Imagine if Converge took a ton of drugs, listened to a shitload of prog, got themselves some electronic gubbins and relocated to West Yorkshire and you might have some idea what this record's all about. Members went on to do time in the likes of Beecher, Humanfly, Tigers, Thirty Seconds Until Armageddon and Born From Pain.
Will:
Oh man...I forgot completely about Beecher. I really liked their first record.
a pack of wolves:
I'm guessing Andy Sutcliffe of Canvas was still in Beecher at that point, he left after not too long to focus on Humanfly with his brother John (Canvas' vocalist). Actually, you wouldn't care to throw up some Beecher would you? I never got into them back in the day, but my tastes have changed since then and I was probably too obsessed with bands like D.S.-13 and Voorhees to pay them any decent attention.
Also, listen to Canvas.
spoon_of_grimbo:
i am so intrigued by that canvas album that i've literally just ordered a copy off amazon (£2.30 like new, not bad eh?!) without even having listened to a second of it! it's a UK seller so it'll be here in a coupla days, i'll report back with my findings when i've had a listen... :-D
a pack of wolves:
Hope you like it! I've got a few UK albums from around that era that were also doing (to me) interesting stuff with hardcore like Imbalance, Stalingrad, Humanfly (they've changed massively into a post-metal band now) etc that I can throw up if anyone's interested. A lot of them were on now-defunct labels like Armed With Anger and Hermit so probably aren't around to buy. I'm surprised the Canvas album is still kicking around!
