Jeph experiments that we like
« on: 15 Apr 2009, 17:35 »

The characters's Twitter feeds are a successful experiment. They add to the fun.

I like it when Jeph tries out a new viewing angle, like Dora standing over Sven. It adds verisimilitude as well as keeping things fresh.

What are some other things Jeph has tried that have worked out well?

Every new character is an experiment.

Pennelope was a good example of trying something new and having it work out.

OH WAIT
ONOES

I have to agree on the Twitters. I did something similar once with Facebook and some characters of mine, it's great for character development.
Also, I like how he gradually fiddled with his drawing style to get to the QC-ness we all know and love. The progress from the first issue to the latest one is rather impressive if you ask me, and quite commendable.

Marten, Faye, Dora and Hannelore each have about the same number of followers on Twitter as Jessica Alba.

That's just WEIRD.

I'm getting the feeling that some people have been banned, though.  It does seem distinctly quiet around here of late.  But perhaps they're all on holiday.

I've only banned, like, one person in the past couple months. The comic discussion boards are quieter because I moved the forums link off the main navigation on my site so we're not getting as many new people (I did this on purpose)

Jeph's been trying out more of characters in motion, like Faye jumping up or trying to dodge Dora.

It's remarkable how much that adds to the enjoyment, at least to mine. What does everyone else think?

I'd like to see a week long mystery episode, perhaps Jeph has a new character in mind, but instead of seeing the character like we do all the others. Instead we see everyone from this new character's POV.  Basically looking out of their eyes.
The mystery is, who is this new character? Can we tell by everyone's reactions to the normal story line that week? With hints in reflections? How the main characters react to them? Dialogue would have to lack gender markers to make this work and keep the mystery up.
This would let Jeph either resurrect a old character or add a new one MYSTERIOUSLY... woooooo...  off panel scenes of the comic would be normal w/o said new character to progress storyline, and best of all Jeph could have guest artists draw the QC characters as this person sees them, maybe...

It'd toy with our imaginations, tease us mercilessly, and even if we got the sex right, or guess who the character might be, by not showing us the character in first person POV, but in 3rd through their eyes (maybe using narrative boxes ?) he can always change his mind. Heck he could tie this into a contest on QC's main page and to a Poll and make it a big event.
Might even get us a New T-shirt out of it to buy!

  Whatcha think?

The characters of Questionable Content in an melodramatic anime space opera-esque setting in an armada battling an alien armada after diplomatic relations between the two species go sour after an assassination. Alien space fleet composed of spheres of various opacity, color, and size with varying abilities. Terran fleet resembles floating silver metal shapes (turds and other more intricate designs), mecha, and smaller ships. The various characters are in various areas of the fleet. Each fleet is around 200 million ships.

Example (making stuff up):

Marten: Average Mecha pilot | Dora: Battlecrusier Chimera Port Railgun Cluster Operator | Sven: A doctor | Faye: Mecha pilot ace | Raven: Bridge Officer: Communications | Steve: Average Mecha pilot | Hannelore: Robot Services Controller (janitorial, ship repairs, etc. She controls the entire fleet of service robots with her mind) | Jimbo: A military doctor | Winslow: Supercomputer I | Pintsize: Supercomputer II (both assist Admiral in strategic options and contribute one vote each during voting activities) | Penny: Battlecruiser Chimera Starboard Railgun Cluster Operator | Tai: XO | Pizza Girl (in costume): Admiral, Flagship: Chimera

0 Admiral establishes visual contact with Alien fleet, prepares fleet, sounds battle stations alert
1 Fleet activates cloak to get in closer to Alien fleet, Alien fleet does not seem to notice
2 Railguns on the larger cruisers activate and attack Alien fleet, but the ships were all holograms, and Alien Fleet physically splits one half of the Terran fleet away from the other.
3 Mecha, (taking classifications from Homeworld 2) Corvettes, and Fighters scrambled to engage with Alien fleet
4 Alien fleet uses slow-charging Anti-Matter beam to pick off the largest of the Terran ships, Anti-Matter Beam Vessels protected by millions of small vessels.
5 AMBV charges beam for Chimera, and

Dora wakes up, sweating like a beast.

These recurrent dreams will form a subplot for Dora (I have a sneaking suspicion that Dora is much more nerdier than anyone in QC, and this idea is a manifestation of that belief)

going back on topic,

I thought Marten finding a job at the library was pretty cool. Unexpected.
