summer songs!
« on: 20 May 2009, 11:27 »

everybody has at least one.  that one song that all summer long, when you are driving with the windows down and the sun is up, you and your friends crank up loudly and sing along to.  or, if you have no friends, you turn it up anyways and sing along alone and feel okay about not having friends because the weather is beautiful and your summer song is on.

this year i think the summer song is going to be 'skylark' by arrah and the ferns (thanks tyler).  in close second are 'the sound' by human highway and 'will you return' by the avett brothers.

what song is going to be your soundtrack for this summer?

I could name so many, but my key one is 'Summertime' by The Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Probably the entire Mezmerize/Hypnotize album by System of a Down.
My friend and I learned the harmonies a couple years ago, and this is probably the last time I'm seeing him, so yeah.

Modest Mouse...

Pretty much anything by Modest Mouse.

If I had to pick one, 'Heart Cooks Brain'.

There's so many...

Probably "Young Adult Friction" off the new Pains of Being Pure At Heart.

With a close second being "I'm On A Boat." Hehe.

seconding the "anything by Black Moth Super Rainbow" sentiment.

almost anything by Of Montreal ("Lyrsergic Bliss" espescially), Akron/Family's "Love Is Simple" (yes, the whole thing), and Eddie Cochran; particularly "Summertime Blues" and "Cut Across Shorty"

there are, of course, way way more but those are the first couple that come to mind at the moment.

As far as songs that actually name-check summer go, my perennial favourite is "Saints" by the Breeders.

Generally I tend to listen to more jazz in summer than in winter - if the weather's not too hot then I'll throw the windows open and blast out some Charlie Parker or Clifford Brown/Max Roach, or if it's too hot outside then I'll shut the house and pull the blinds down and chill out to Lester Young or Stan Getz or Ben Webster. Long summer nights are best accompanied by either Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy, Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George & Ira Gershwin Songbook, or Mis'ry and the Blues by Jack Teagarden.

This!

That being said "Poughkeepsie" by The Lemonheads has been a favorite of mine since I started college, since I only really spend a lot of time in my hometown during the summer.  I also listen to a lot of Ted Leo during the summer because the heat reminds me of the time I saw them play an outdoor show and it was 100 degrees out.

As far as songs from this year, "Now We Can See" is obviously the jam.

OH! And the entire Brightblack Morning Light s/t.  When I listen to it I think of the heat rising off the pavement in Chicago as a band of teenagers dressed similarly to the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar walk through the haze to a hidden creek in the city.

ooh, along those lines "Lost Art of Keeping a Secret" and "Feel Good Hit of the Summer" and pretty much anything off of Rated R is GREAT for summer car driving music.

OH! And the entire Brightblack Morning Light s/t.
Just checked out a few clips and they're sounding great!  Cheers for the recommend...

Reminds me vocals-wise of a couple of things I generally put on rotate in summer: Spiritualised's first album and/or EPs around that time; Koushik.

Other than that, I certainly listen to more reggae and pretty much any kind of dance music.  R&B on hot summer evenings.

Beulah and Sea & Cake are two peerless indie bands to explore this summer.
Sam Prekop's solo records are pretty good for summer listening too.

Slanted and Enchanted is my favourite summer album, although summer isn't really that different from winter here.

I would like to second BMSR, Beulah and Beck.
I'd like to add the Avalanches (duuuuuuhhh), up in flames by Manitoba (now caribou, all snaith's stuff is wonderful for summer), Dead Meadow- yeah, pretty much anything that's fuzzy and stoner-rock-like.

I third (or whatever) Beulah. Ozma is another great summer band, too. Both of those have been summer bands for a few years now. Lately so far this year I've been listening to a lot of old Green Day, 60s girl groups, and Tiga, thanks to Emilio.

Also, "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry is always good for summer.

Honestly, that's it. I thought it'd be more exciting. =/

For some reason I am blasting the first three Elvis Costello records near constantly this year.

This Years Model is probably in my all time top twenty records. It's a thoroughly vicious record but it still makes me happy for some reason.

Pretty much anything off "Pleased to Meet Me" by The Replacements.  Even "Skyway," which manages to sound summery AND wintry at the same time...

Seriously, when I finally get my lazy ass around to learning to drive (I'm 21!!!), the very first song I'm gonna be playing after I get my license is "Alex Chilton"!!!

Some people are made really uncomfortable by the responsibility of driving or have some sort of phobia that prevents them from really learning; other people live in urban settings where public transportation is extensive enough that learning to drive is, though perhaps useful in an auxiliary capacity, practically unnecessary.

yeah, this more or less - i'm just finishing uni in the next coupla weeks, and while i've been here, there's been no need for me to drive.  i prefer walking anyway.  i've had a coupla driving lessons from my dad, nothing major though.  probably gonna take a bunch of lessons over this summer, hopefully i'll be driving by the year's end.  well, if i can afford a car by then anyway!

oh, and back on topic - the new Riverboat Gamblers album is a pretty awesome summer record.
