Syfy Channel
« on: 07 Jul 2009, 23:53 »

It's official:  The Sci Fi Channel has been renamed Syfy.

Quote from: Wikipedia
On March 16, 2009, Sci Fi announced that it would be changing its name to Syfy, to end confusion over how to capitalize and stylize their name and as part of an on-going rebranding effort. Network officials also noted that, unlike the generic term "sci fi" which represents the entire science fiction genre, the term "Syfy" can be protected by trademark and therefore would be easier to market on other goods or services without fear of confusion with other companies' products. The only significant previous use of the term "Syfy" in relation to science fiction was by the website Syfy Portal, which became Airlock Alpha after selling the brand to NBC Universal (represented by a shell company) in February.  Reaction to the new name has been largely negative.  The new name took effect on July 7, 2009.

Thoughts?

Now that BSG's gone, they have absolutely no reason for people to watch their network.

Except for this new "Syfy" bullshit.

I remember reading about this on Fark and thinking it HAD to be an April Fool's Day prank. That's a phenomenally stupid, cringe-worthy, eye-twitchingly fuckawful name change.

Fun fact: I once watched an entire 2-part, 4-hour "movie" on that channel called "Runaway Train" featuring Rob Lowe as the big star. It was everything you would expect.

Not only is the new "name" completely stupid, but it is pointless because it doesn't change anything.  If you tell someone you watched something on the "SyFy" channel as opposed to the "Sci-Fi" channel, they'll still laugh at you, won't know that the channel has a new name, and won't care.

"Imagine Greater" nabs them a second award for Stupidest Motto and also gets bonus points for being grammatically incorrect, though I suppose "Imagine More Greatly" would sound even more stupid (which I would not have thought possible until now).

I think the motto is taking the operator 'Greater' and making it an 'Imagine Greater' operator. So instead of an adjective that you apply to the thing on the right you're getting a verb that you apply to a thing on the right.

And I heard that their changing the name to something meaningless so that they can get away with showing less science-fictioney things.

The channel's crap right now, but it could have some things going for it soon.  New episodes of Eureka and Sanctuary, the new Warehouse 13 and Stargate Universe series, possible reboots of Alien Nation and Quantum Leap. (Is there a reason these things are coming in twos? )  Though they completely fail in dropping Dr. Who; since as far as I know, they lost in the bidding war with BBCA for the Doctor's next season.

In other news, Pizza Hut is renaming a few of their outlets to The Hut.

I don't get it, what is with these corporations and becoming less specific?
To those of you who think you're clever, I worked at a Pizza Hut not long ago, and believe me, "Jabba" jokes were made in abundance.

Well, I don't think it's "un-grammatical". It's ambiguous however, because you don't know if it's saying that you should have a greater imagination, or if you should imagine the word "greater".

Also, Space channel is a much better name.

If someone could explain what is ungrammatical about "imagine greater" that would be lovely because it seems fine to me.

If "imagine" is a verb, then it would be modified by an adverb.  "Greater" is not an adverb; it is an adjective.  "Imagine more greatly" would be correct.  If someone has a better imagination than you, you might say that they can "imagine more greatly" than you, but it is not correct to say that they can "imagine greater" than you.

But as has been pointed out, another interpretation is that "imagine" is the verb but "greater" is its object, e.g. "imagine something greater" or "imagine greater things".  You think things are great now?  Well imagine greater!  My comment was made before that other interpretation was suggested.

I guess I have an unconscious block against the ugliness that is 'more greatly' even existing which I feel is legit

"Imagine Greater" is not ugly in your mind because it implies a noun afterward, like "Imagine Greater Things" or "Imagine Greater People", which I think is the intended point of the motto.

If they couldn't copyright "SciFi" because it's a recognized genre name, they should have copyrighted "SciFi Channel" -- that should have been legal, and would have made sense.  Instead, we get the syphilitic channel:

SyFy
Ymagyne grater
yn ur vagyna

-_-

Finally, they have a network name to live up to the quality of such movies as "Mansquito."
