you know, i'm feeling momentarily charitable, so i wont say that a modern adaption of the smurfs can't work. i wont even say that using live actors can't work. but for fuck's sake; how many god damn movies can use the exact same plot?

magical creatures from [insert franchise] are transported to the 'real world' of [insert city] and must enlist the help of [insert actors] to solve [insert problem], along the way struggling to cope with the unfamiliar dangers of the 'real world' so that they can learn [insert lesson], and find their way home to [insert magical world], before ultimately deciding to stay with their new friends in the 'real world' in order to pave the way for a sequel.

these sodomizations of our collective childhood would probably be alot more tolerable if the people responsible would actually put some god damn effort in.

Yeah, I wonder how comparable this will be to Alvin and the Chipmunks. Horrible musical numbers? Stupid, predictable plot? Characters that barely resemble their cartoon counterparts?

Personally I never really watched the Smurfs as a kid but I've seen enough to know that this is going to be horrible. Honestly though, I'm kind of wondering what the film would be like if someone who was actually passionate about The Smurfs made this movie. How different would this be? Could a totally CG movie a la Pixar work at all?

Man, don't get me wrong or anything, but having to sit through Alvin And The Chipmunks numerous times at home, and the..Squeakquel twice in theaters, I've gotta say for a straight up fun for kids factor these movies are pretty solid. Sure they aren't anything like the original cartoon, and they are annoying and garish to adults, but to kids, they are fantastic silly fun. And that is alright by me.

Plus, a world without my three year old sister correcting me on her name("Ahem...My name is Princess Brittney Wone Bowchikawowow Alvin.") is a world I don't want to live in. She loves these films, and will sing along to the soundtrack and do all these cute dances, and honestly, if it means I have so sit though these two annoying films, and their equally as bad soundtrack, just to see she sing and dance, I will.

I think the reason people are bothered by this sort of thing is not that they think that kids should not have movies that they can enjoy for fun and silliness and singing along to, but that they KNOW that Hollywood can make movies that kids love and can be silly about and quote and sing along to that don't make them want to gouge their eyes out with a rusty spoon and feed them to themselves.

Basically what I mean is, you DON'T have to sit through those two annoying films and their equally as bad soundtracks to see her sing and dance. There are plenty of movies that she can do those same things to that don't induce mass synchronized projectile vomiting.

She is three. She's seen all the Miyazaki movies, and she doesn't care. She saw All Dogs Go To Heaven and she doesn't sing any of those songs. She's seen most good Disney/Pixar and she doesn't sing along to those. These films don't keep her attention. She likes cute animals that move around a lot and sing and dance and be silly. She isn't going to get complex plots and why the Chipmunk movies are bad. She sees cute animals, with such textbook emotions that are easy to read on their faces so she can connect to them better. She sees songs that are repeated in the film, and is the commercials so often that they are super easy for her to remember, same with the dance moves. She is three years old. She doesn't need a movie that is going to present her with strong emotional struggles.

What the hell were you watching when you were a kid? When I was three and four I was watching Sesame Street and the Sonic cartoon, and Super Mario Bros Super show. I mean, these things aren't the height of art and intelligence, but they weren't supposed to be. Then I got into Sailor Moon for awhile. I mean, shit. It was fucking Sailor Moon. Kids are not looking for some amazing piece of cinema. They aren't looking for art. They are looking for fun.

Does my watching Little Nemo, Fantastic Planet (my mother was a terrible censor), and My Neighbor Totoro pretty exclusively as a child give me as excuse to frown at your sister?
Also stuff like Sesame Street and Sat: AM I'd give a pass on because at least they were well made and didn't talk down to the kids.

To be fair, a lot of the childhood properties that I loved as a child and so many people got upset about with shitty movies were shit terrible to start with.

Yeah, some of those old cartoons really just run on nostalgia factor and are certainly not enjoyable at all anymore.

Now Scooby-Doo, for those first two series at least, are still awesome and I still watch them.
