Not one of the greats, but for those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s certainly an iconic figure who will be missed.

I'm always surprised at how little some of my friends know about John Hughes.  Like, several don't even know who the guy was.  I've told people the news that he's died, and they're immediately really underwhelmed.  Every one of them, though, just didn't put a director to his movies, so as soon as I mention Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, they all said something along the lines of "wait, that guy?"

Thoroughly underappreciated director who contributed a lot to the movies I watched growing up.  RIP, good sirrah.

I've always thought that it's strange that he is always associated with those two movies, but not Ferris Bueller, which I think is more recognizable.

He really did make some great 80's teen movies.

In short, if it was set in a suburb of Chicago and it was the 80s, it was him.

True, but for some reason Ferris Bueller didn't click with these people as having been directed by Hughes.  Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club were the two that everybody not only seemed to know were directed by the same man, but eventually did remember as being done by Hughes.

It saddens me to say that he will never direct a teen comedy for the current generation.
I'm a huge fan and have recently moved to a chicago suburb, so his movies connect to me on that level basic level as well.

Everybody forgets about Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Weird Science, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

He definitely was one of the greats.

I forgot about all of those, save for Weird Science, and had to IMDb it to believe you.  I think a lot of people probably only knew as much about him as I do; that is, don't know he was a writer, and only knew of his directing career.  He wrote for all of those, but didn't direct any National Lampoon movies.  He also wrote the entire Home Alone series, the Beethoven series, Miracle on 34th Street, Baby's Day Out, The Great Outdoors, and Dennis the Menace.
