Yeah, Audacity is what I was about to recommend. I use my college labs' Pro Tools, but that shit is expensive if you don't want to pursue a career in audio.
If you have a Mac, Garageband is also a viable option.

They make tapes that come in 5 minute sides...hmm
I should start writing, maybe release some cassette singles.
