I actually have a theory about why it happened and how he got to that point that makes a lot of sense. I'm reluctant to post it on the forums, because if I'm right, it ruins a potential story arc. On the other hand, in answering my questions in the Ask Jeph thread, Jeph didn't list this as something he didn't know about the comic and doesn't entertain story ideas anyway. /shrug

It's better art if it's never explained. Real suicides leave the survivors in lifelong incomprehension.
