In early 1930 some of my fellow countrymen had the bright idea that a single red stripe in your shirt was sufficient grounds to suspect you to be a commie. Are you saying that in 1918 a single red stripe in a sock turned a baseball player into a New Englander?

Oh man now I want to watch that game. That is amazing.

I didn't get to see it. Because my Fox station is out of Albany, we were stuck with Mets v Yankees.

edit: and btw, the Sox had the wrong socks. They were supposed to be striped, like the Ubs.

19:09 I've just been handed the team-sheet for tonight's game and it's some team for the Reds. Kuszczak; G.Neville (c), Brown, O'Shea, P.Neville; Beckham, Scholes, Butt, Giggs; Rooney, Owen.

I am at work, but thankfully Fox Soccer are broadcasting the game live and I have DVR.

I'm taking a football break until I go to see United-New England in July.

Saturday was too embarassing. Barca totally and completely outclassed United. Though, I did watch yesterday's promotion final, which was rather exciting. A great game to watch, and congrats to Swansea.

Normally I would love to join in a hockey chat, but the world championships are over, and my appetite for fancy goals and gritty hockey battles is
temporarily sated.

The fact that the NHL teams with my hometown heros on their rosters are out of contention has nothing whatsoever to do with it!

Just caught up on the weekend's action, Geraint Thomas wins the tour of Bavaria and Wiggins put 30 seconds into Cancellara over 26k in a time trial. Methinks Team Sky are planning on making a mark on the Tour de France.

Dauphine is going to be very telling.

Round #1 to Canucks. Wonder whether they will miss Hamhuis further down the road though? Salo has a long history of being injury prone, so if the Bruins knock him out, the Canucks' defence will be on the thin side. Leave it to Luongo?

3 observations:

1) From a non-neutral standpoint, are the Cup Finals ALWAYS that intense? I'll have a heart attack if this goes 7.

2) Dick Dastardley did not deserve to lose that game. What a show in net.

3) Burroughs better get at least a hefty fine if not suspended for biting Bergeron. You asshat.

I can only speak for myself, but at some point I had to stop watching the 3rd periods of Finland's critical games at World Championships, Olympics and/or Canada Cup. I made the decision after I realized that I was coming close to shoving my then 3-year old kid out of the way in frustration. I was so ashamed of myself even though I never touched the kid. I may have grown up a bit during the 15+ years since...

The antics of the commentator make a huge difference. The dude who's been commentating the games of our team is downright mad (everybody loves him!!!), so unless things go well for us, I may have to leave the room. Go for a walk or something. When he is on a roll... it is nailbiting squared, and too much for the old blood pressure.

Those started popping up on Boston sports-talk radio during the Tampa series.

To be honest, I had a friend that was appaled by his actions last night, and I can see why. He took a stick to the back of Canuckula's knee. I'm all for him beating the piss out of that little twat, but the knee's a dangerous place to swing a giant stick. A good crosscheck to the back would have solved the problem more efficiently (and more awesome..ly).

Great opening weekend to the Tour de France. A bit of drama, the defending champion forced into a chasing position, amazing TTT riding, the god of thunder in yellow. Some interesting things are going to happen on the forthcoming flat days.

Also, if America annexes the Isle of Man in the next few hours you can have the winner on 4th July.

Well I got that completely wrong. Well done to Tyler Farrar for an excellent job of negotiating the chaos for the win.

Cat 3 climb to the finish today so a puncheurs stage. Hard to make a prediction at the moment but I'm hoping for Geraint Thomas to make a move on the yellow jersey.

Awesome ride by Hushovd to keep up with Contador's group and stay in yellow today.

And hey, it seems like Jereme Roy from FDJ is in the breakaway almost every other day. Weird stuff.

Yeah, Hushovd's got a lot more than people give him credit for. Still uncertain where he's planning on going with this year's tour. He's most suited to green jersey work but seems not be be putting in a fight for the new style points comp.

Not at all convinced by the comi's decision to strip Cav and Thor of yeserday's points. Seems a little petty and contrived for what was a harmless bit of rubbing.

Roy? Well there's an interesting rider. A brilliant breakaway rider at time but I think it's not along before we see him hit form as a Super Dom.

I was really confused by them having points stripped. Versus must have showed the replay in slow-mo 100 times, there wasn't a headbutt or anything besides leaning.

I think, and this is pure speculation, that because the two of them have form for aggressive lining in the sprint then the commi's are basically firing a warning shot early on while the points comp is still wide open.

21 stages of racing. Stages are point to point rather than circuit races.

Time is cumulative. The time the rider spends on each stage is added to their total. The rider with the lowest time wears the yellow jersey until the end of the next stage. The rider who has the lowest time at the end of the tour wins.

Other Jerseys:
White - awarded by the same means to riders aged 25 and under.
Green - awarded to the rider with the most cumulative points (points are awarded at three places; intermediate sprint (a point roughly halfway along the stage course where riders are encouraged to take the lead)), hills (depending on length and gradient there are five classifications of hill with increasing amounts of points for the first people over the top) and the end of the stage. Mainly contended for by sprinters and puncheurs (aggressive all rounders).
Polka Dot - This is solely for points earned on hills thus recognising the best climbers.

The most combative rider of the previous day is recognised with a race number of white numbers on red rather than the usual black on white.

Other basic rules, don't take drugs, avoid unneccesary contact, don't interfere with the racing line of another rider.

Best thing to do is watch a few stages and ask questions. I can recommend the ITV4 feed as the presenters are good at explaining stuff fairly clearly and keep covering points throughout the tour for any newcomers to watching it. While I'd like to watch the live feed, the 1hr highlights show covers the main action of the day.

For those in America, Versus handles all the coverage. And there is a ton of it. They show each stage live in the morning, followed by 2 hour highlight shows at like..noon and 2:30. They also have a big three-hour "expanded coverage" show at 8PM, which is some good stuff.

What you need to realize when watching cycling, especially the Tour de France, is that while it may seem very individual, it is most definitely a team sport.

Edit: It appears that Norwgian Boss Hogg won today's stage. Hushovd finished in the lead pack, so stays in yellow.

double edit: Timing, for newcomers: At the end of the stage, if there is a big group crossing the finish line, they all get credit for the time of the first man across in the group.

Green jersey largely resolve so now we're into the proper racing. I reckon we're going to see a lot of tag team attacking from the Brother's Schleck. Surprised by the human mosquito that is Evans and not so much that Contador fell off.

Desperately wish Wiggins was still here as I reckon he could make a difference to the methods and the standings.

Also Hoogerland is the greatest sportsperson in the world ever TRUFAX.
