(Snerk) "Three to four?" Yeah, maybe ones who start exclusively. You're talking to a fan of a team that hasn't carried less than 12 pitchers on their roster at any one time in the last decade or so.
I've never really understood why baseball season has so many games as compared to other sports, other than simple historical reasons and a lack of "recovery time" needed between games. Basketball could legitimately play more games a year, but they come up against scheduling issues - mostly around holidays and the fact that many teams share facilities with other sports teams, like college squads and hockey clubs.
Hockey, I really couldn't see teams playing more than four (scheduled) games in a week, without at least three or more days off.
American football may have developed the "once a week" thing from the college game - you go to class Monday through Friday, and you play sports on Saturday. That kinda got ingrained into the sport, and I doubt that the idea of playing more than once a week would take hold.
So that would leave us with Futball. 38 games in league, and about seven "non-league" games, roughly two a week. Looking over a couple of "fixtures", it appears that there are very few times where teams play more than three times in a one-week period - and definitely not all against league opponents.
I wonder if this schedule is essentially due to the physical exertion (90 minutes is a long while to be running up and down the pitch, after all) or some other reason?
