Here's an interesting article regarding Bernie Ecclestone's and Lakshmi Mittal's possible response, spending-wise, should QPR be in the Premier League next season:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/may/01/neil-warnock-qpr-premier-league

Sounds like the owners and Neil Warnock have their heads screwed on right. Meaningful buys rather than spending for spending's sake. Makes me feel much more comfortable about supporting a club with obscenely wealthy owners.

So, my 401k is partially invested in a fund which has shares in the New York Times.

We are talking about the New York Times that partially own the Red Sox. THAT IS AWESOME.

Then again, ew, I own part of Liverpool.

When you're starting from a base level of "oh god I don't want to think about it" any tiny improvement can be considered "much more comfortable".

Yeah they should never have got so far. Kinda chuffed that they did though, gotta love a comedy underdog, and the Inter result was quite something.

Final predictions: 3-1 Barce with a red card, >8 yellows and at least two questionable penalty decisions.

The Flyers main issue right now, at least to me, is their coach.

He seems to have absolutely ZERO confidence in Boucher as a goalie. If you're just going to pull him every game, bench him to begin with and start Bobrovsky. Though at this point, with the Bruins up 3-0, it's a bit of a moot point.

That's a good point Shane. The papers have been making a really big deal about how hard it is, confidence-wise for goalies in the playoffs. The Flyers coach hasn't exactly picked the best time to lose all confidence in all three of his goalies.

Yeah, goalie is one of those positions where it seems like the good ones tend to be the kind of people have that have a level of confidence bordering upon the irrational. It's both an acquired trait and a job requirement, I think, since there's so much that happens that's outside of their control.

Sorry Leeds didn't make it through, Tommy. Like many Australians I have a soft spot for them dating back to the Kewell/Viduka days.

I haven't seen anything more than highlights of QPR this season but what you're saying accords with pretty much everything I've read online about the team - but I think it's expected that teams going into the Premiership will have to overhaul their squad, no?

Anyway, the major news today was off the field: after months and months of waiting, the FA finally delivered its verdict and gave QPR a fine but no points deduction. Given all the league politics that would have come into play, not to mention law suits, if QPR had been denied promotion due to a points deduction, this is probably not surprising news, but it is a massive relief.

Anyway QPR have flattered to deceive so many times in the past that, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to come over all Loftus Road for just a moment:

COME ON YOU RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

You know, baseball is my favorite sport by a long way.  Head and shoulders above the rest.  That said, as a lifelong Yankees fan, god DAMN do I hate trying to talk baseball most of the time.  The vigor with which people will ignore my attempts at normal conversation to tell me about how much they hate the Yanks (all the more irritating the LESS OF A REASON YOU HAVE TO DO SO DAMMIT) is kind of shocking.  Please do not start with the "evil empire" conversation and try to tell me my favorite team is "buying championships and ruining the sport" or any of the other bullshit I constantly hear during baseball season.

On a lighter note, I thought he was being overly optimistic, but man did my brother call it, and I'm gonna back him on this one.  After how close he came last season when he finally broke out, I think Robbie Cano can finally do it.  Bring home an AL MVP, my good man.  Do it to it.

EDIT: upon further inspection, I feel it necessary to add that I'm not trying to call out anybody in this thread with that first part of my post, it just has a way of coming around every time I really don't want it to.

I don't particularly care about any kind of 'evil empire' thing. Tell me about an evil empire, I'll sooner assume you're talking about Rage Against The Machine. I just genuinely hate about 99% of Yankees fans I meet (on their own merit alone, I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that they are Yankees fans).

I also realize that I'm probably something of a minority in this respect.

This was a fun weekend. The Sox put in a comeback win yesterday, the Bruins swept the Flyers, and United are on the cusp of winning a record-setting 19th league title.

And I got kinda drunk on Friday night.

First Stoke completely outplay Arsenal

0-0 on horrible career-threatening injuries, this is literally the only score that matters against Stoke City

(it was a fairly embarrassing performance, mind)

Arsenal were the dirtier team in that game, just sayin'.

Fairly even tbh, one coulda-been-a-red apiece and general thuggishness and tomfoolery all round.

That loan spell at Bolton has turned Jack Wilshere into a proper nasty little shit. The little scamp.

I was at a gig and I thought "Oh damn, I'm going to miss the first half of the FA Cup final." But then I realised "Actually, when was the last FA Cup final that was actually any good to watch?" I got home in time for the second half, saw the only goal of the game, and heard the pundits talk about how Stoke had played like shit all first half.

Bryan, what's with Ramirez stealing Wilson's crossed arms thingy?

That was Lopez, I think, unless Ramirez did it in a different game and I didn't see. Wilson had that game off because he had pitched in the previous five games in a row, so Lopez did it (apparently) as a sign of respect because Wilson's the closer and therefore the 'leader' of the bullpen. Wilson seemed to approve of it when asked about it, so I guess he didn't mind. Who knows, maybe it'll become a Giants closer tradition even if/when Wilson leaves the team.

I'm pretty sure we also set the Premier League record for "most consecutive minutes spent kicking a ball around in your own half". It was either 6 or 7 to end the game. I kept yelling "Ole!" at the TV but it got old.

Okay, so I like throwback uniforms. They're cool. And I think paying respect to the history of the team is always fun (hell, the Twins are wearing 1960s style jerseys the rest of the year to honor Harmon Killebrew).

But, tomorrow, the Sox are playing the Cubs, and wearing 1918-era uniforms. Here's what they look like:

-White hat
-White jersey
-White undershirts
-White pants
-White socks with a single red stripe

Just thinking about that makes me want to take a nap.

Pardon me if I'm off by a year or seven (I'm geographically challenged as I moved out from the US in '90), but wouldn't the Sox of that era need to wear BLACK socks?

This is what the White Sox wore in '18.

This is what the Cubs wore that same year.
