Three days left in the opening matchup, and I am on track for well over 1,000 points. I should win a trophy.

Half the Penguins' bench was empty today from all the ejections because they were sore about sucking fat dicks at hockey. I lol'd

Someone tell the Penguins that the Hanson brothers called; they're giving their act a bad name.

If Torres isn't suspended for the rest of the series, the rest of the players in these playoffs better make sure their life insurance policies are paid up.

No gripes about them Preds advancing. Rinne's never been too hot for our national team. Ok, may be a concern is that with the Red Wings out the Swedes can ice a more formidable team at WCs. ;-)

The NHL play offs have left me sorta meh. Dunno why? May be because there are no home town heros in the hunt? May be because this was the first season in many a year, when we didn't have an NHL pool running at work. Anyway I have no emotional investment on any of the teams. The sooner the Devils are eliminated the better, though. Lost too many of those pools because I didn't draft Brodeur.

If Torres isn't suspended for the rest of the series, the rest of the players in these playoffs better make sure their life insurance policies are paid up.

A 25 game suspension should be enough.

For some reason, I would absolutely LOVE to see Ottawa pull the upset tonight.

...Okay, I know the reason. It would guarantee NO Original Six team in the SC semis for the first time since '67.

Allllll rightythen.

Rangers-Capitals: Teams split the four-game series during the regular season. I'm thinking this one will be close. Capitals in 7. (I'll go with at least two OT games - with one making Lundqvist looking silly.)

Flyers-Devils: Teams split the six-game series during the regular season. I think the Flyers will have the momentum, though - and Brodeur looked beatable tonight. Flyers in 6. (One OT here.)

Blues-Kings: Kings went 3-1 over the Blues in the regular season; one of those wins was in the shootout - in a double-shootout between Quick and Elliott. The Moose will be the factor in this series, especially if Halak can't play. Kings in 6. (Two OT here, I'm thinking.)

Coyotes-Predators: Oh boy. We won both times we went out to the desert (though the last one was a shootout win back in March), but they beat us both times at the Bridge. If we jump out to a two-nothing lead coming back home, all we gotta do is hold them in game three or four. I'm thinking Preds in 6. (I don't think my heart could take an OT game, but with these two teams it might just happen. I'll be conservative and say two will be in OT, including the series clincher in the desert.

Welp, my personal attachment to the NHL playoffs is done. Phoenix-LA and Rags-Devils in the semis. I'm wondering if we're going to see a Marty Party as part of Brodeur's swan song in the NHL. Would be a heckuva way to go out - win the Cup when no one thought you'd even be the starting goalie at the start of the season.

In that case you may consider watching Hockey WCs. U.S.A. vs Finland quarterfinal coming up. In the preliminary round US beat us 5-0. There was only one team on the ice. Scott Gordon has managed to summon a hungry bunch of youngsters.

Finland advancing 3-2. Gamewinner scored with 8 seconds to go. I'm not sure that we deserved this in view of the earlier blowout. Palmieri and Ryan scored for team USA. Joensuu(twice) and Koivu for team Finland.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Kings have won their 12th game since April 1st, against only one loss in regulation, one in OT and one in the shootout. For those of you keeping track at home, that means their record over the last month and a half is 12-1-2.

Hockey WC semifinals:
Russia beats Finland 6-2. No surprise there. Malkin with a hat-trick.
Slovakia beats Czech republic 3-1. This was a surprise to me.

I would say Russia is the favorite to win this. It would have been
interesting to see how the skilled Russians would have handled
the very aggressive forechecking by team USA that gave us a
headache. Hopefully one of these years.

===========================

Russia beats Slovakia 6-2 in the final. Congrats to both teams and their fans! Team Russia won every single game in this WCs. Czech Republic hangs on to their early lead over Finland to win the bronze medal match 3-2. The host nation curse continues.

Andy Schleck is out of the Tour de France. Wiggins has already won Criterium de Dauphine and the Paris-Nice this year, a feat only ever achieved by riders that went on to win Le Tour. Cuddles doesn't look to make a good defending champion. I reckon this should mean the most exciting sporting event of the year starts in a few weeks and a long overdue British win is going to happen.

Spain won the Euro 2012 championship 4-0 against Italy. Their style of football is unbelievable and it is not surprising that they haven't conceded a goal since 2006. Not in SIX YEARS have this team let one in. It is fantastic to watch them play, it's like they're from another planet! They broke the record for the final score in a Finals game, and for the team that has won (in succession) the most championships (Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012).

Even if England hadn't lost out on penalties to Italy, and maybe could've beaten Germany (very unlikely), there is no team that I've seen in the championship that could best Spain.

Although I hope that Rooney is dropped from the squad for our next international championship. He is supposedly our "best player", but has scored something like four goals in the last four years - and he did not score at all in the World Cup in 2010, and scored one goal at Euro 2012. It is shameful, and he needs to be substituted so that someone like Caroll can play more often.

Lastly - what the fuck is up with David Beckham not being able to play for the British Olympic team?

Given that in the preliminary round Spain vs. Italy ended in a 1-1 draw this is somewhat of an overstatement. I guess you meant to include only the KO matches of the major tournaments or something?

But yeah, Spain gave a strong impression the matches that I happened to see. The final was a walkover. They could have just shaken hands after about 75 minutes.

Wayne Rooney is claimed to be England's best football striker and scored one goal over four matches in the biggest international event of the season. He achieved this with the full support of his team of 10 other players.
Mark Cavendish is claimed to be England's best cycling sprinter and has won a sprint finish out of two stages of the Tour de France, the biggest international event of the season. He achieved this with what amounts to no help from any of his team.
Rooney is paid basically 10 times the amount that Cavendish is for a performance that is currently half as good. Football fans, there is a slight possibility that you aren't getting your money' worth.

Mind you, I'd be very interested to see what happened if Dave Brailsford was put in charge of England for the World Cup. After all, how much worse could he possibly make it compared to last time?

Ah. Well, I was repeating what Shearer was saying in the commentary, so perhaps they meant the KO matches.

Italy weren't that great. Hell, they had to beat England on penalties after having so many chances in the match...

I re-watched some 1998 World Cup footage (where we went out against Argentina) and just thought how brilliant Michael Owen was for a footballer, yet he didn't seem to get the "Rooney syndrome" and play awfully for his country while enjoying the spoils of a successful club position. There is no reason for these guys to perform well internationally, so they don't. At least, that's what it seems like.

And David Beckham is in his late 30s - he is too old to be playing for England, but the amount of campaigning he did for London 2012 in the first place...as I understand it he was using his international fame and recognition in a positive way to advertise the idea that London was a great place to host the olympics, and even said that he'd be gutted if he wasn't picked - and he wasn't. I don't know, it just seems odd to just ignore Beckham, given the people available.

And David Beckham is in his late 30s - he is too old to be playing for England

I don't see what that would be the case. For instance, Jens Voigt is 40 and currently competing in the Tour de France, an event arguably harder than anything in the Olympics. He's not just there for the ride either, he's a major contributor to the action, especially in the tougher mountain stages. There's a chance he may crop up in the German Olympic Team as well.
Other older athletes include Jeannie Longo who won the Olympic Road Race at the age of 38 and still competes at the top level at the age of 53. Chrissie Wellington has set Ironman records at the age of 35. Haile Gebrselassie last won a Marathon two years ago, at the same age that Beckham is now and is hoping to compete in London.

Playing football matches, even in a tournament event isn't going to be as physically demanding as those sports. On top of that, football is more balanced in favour of skill and experience than simple physical output. Beckham didn't get to be considered the country's best player purely on strength and speed and skill is far easier to maintain as you get older. In theory, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to play effectively in a team. It all comes down to whether he has kept himself in shape and kept his eye in.

To be fair, it doesn't really matter who's in the squad, England hasn't placed in a major tournament in the past decade or more and no signs of them breaking that abysmal streak any time soon.

It's Favre, all over again, in Minnesota.

Prediction: After one, maybe two, good years of challenging for the Cup in Saint Paul, injuries decimate the Wild and Craig Leipold - realizing how big a mistake he made giving two players ridiculous long-term contracts, decides to sell the team.

And they end up moving to Quebec. (Or Las Vegas, if Quebec already manages to steal a team by that time.)

Alright you guys, for the first time in 74 fucking years a Brit has the chance to win The Championships, which would also make him the first Brit since 1936 to win a men's singles Grad Slam title. I predict that if Murray wins, the UK will annihilate itself in a wave of repressed joy and split open the very depths of hell to rain sunshine and puppies upon Satan's domain.

Or you know, cake could be an option.

A Scot in the final of Wimbledon, a Brit in the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France at the end of the first week, a decent British prospect in the F1 at Silverstone. All in all a good day for British sport.

Well, Murray lost; but he's still achieved a lot, and he's young enough to keep coming.

Yeah, it feels weird because I'm an Anglophile and was so rooting for Murray, yet I'm usually a Federer fan and nobody can deny that he clearly played much better than Murray after the first set.

Conflicted loyalties hoo. :psyduck:

10 years later, and I'm STILL waiting for the 12th inning to start.  :x

My theory is that Nashville tries to turn Weber into the ultimate villan (because motherfucking FUCK the Flyers), and they do so with the following matching offer:

14 years, $103,000,000, and a puppy.

Because really, if you shuck the hometown discount AND say no to a puppy?
