Ohio State's perfect season continues to be marred by underperforming teams in the rest of the Big 10. None of the voters are going to be impressed by a win against 1-6 Purdue. And after a big loss to #24 Michigan State, #23 That Team Up North, formally the only ranked opponent still on OSU's schedule, will probably drop out of the rankings, and the Buckeye's hopes for a national championship will drop along with them.

It's Ohio State...you would be surprised what the voters will do with just a name. There is still plenty of time left for two of the others to slip up then they get their chance in the championship game

All of a sudden, the entire state of Wisconsin held its breath.

Four words caused that to happen:

"Aaron Rodgers is injured."

Michigan bit the dust against Nebraska, meaning Northwestern will be the only rank team we played all season.

Fuck you very much, rest of the Big 10. Stop losing against teams that aren't Ohio State.

Don't give up hope...remember that OSU moves up a spot thanks to the loss by Oregon. It could happen again.

This was pretty cool...American football team names and logos reimagined as "real" football crests and team names... impressive redesigns
I am not a fan of the New England one or the Cleveland one, but the rest have interesting takes on the names and animals.

Would an outline of the state have helped? I don't see the crest getting much better, given the traditional culture surrounding the team and it being hard to depict packing without angering 1000s of people...

He will be back and at that time Packers games will be watchable again (though, this Tolzien fellow isn't really all that bad). The prospect is though that the Packers by then might be 0-4 without Rogers. 5-8 or 6-7 is going to make stuff ... akward.

Edit; On the other hand ... they're playing the Giants and the Vikings, the Lions and the Falcons.

Two of those must be winnable, at least. So ... never mind.

You'll notice I haven't posted much in here lately.

That's because at the moment, I really don't like sports.

When your two favorite teams are lacking their best players due to injury, and they are, in the meantime, stinking up the joint... well, you know.

I blame myself for the Sharks not playing so hot lately (aside from the silver lining of beating Vancouver yesterday) because I've been too busy to watch games from start to finish, and every game I've watched the entirety of, we've won.

Mostly I'm just impressed we've managed to hang onto the #2 spot, but the realist side of me is saying to curb my enthusiasm because 1/3 of those points are from us barely hanging on until overtime.

The good news is the west will be a fight to the finish for spots and slots, the bad news is that will take a toll on the teams- please, continue to beat each other senseless, I want the Bruins to win another Cup  :-D :-P

Looking at the standings for the west I saw something odd. Can anyone explain how they are going to play hockey outdoors in a desert environment, even if it is winter?

Environmentalists are going to have a field day with all the refrigeration and power generating equipment being used there  :-o

Maybe, but they already had enough trouble as it was with the Winter Classics melting ice having it out in Southern California seems like a bit of a stretch for the league...

I'm pretty sure they can do it. They just have to be careful about keeping the surface area cold. At least they shouldn't have to worry about humidity - which is a killer to ice - ruining the surface.

Looking at the standings for the west I saw something odd. Can anyone explain how they are going to play hockey outdoors in a desert environment, even if it is winter?

As I understand, the NHL's refrigerator can keep ice frozen with ambient temperatures as high as 70°F (that's 21.1°C for the metrically minded.)  The NHL has also considered not painting extra logos on the ice and leaving the blue lines as hashed lines to make the surface more reflective.

I remember the 2011 Winter Classic where 55°F (12.7°C) rain made the ice a slushy mess.  At the Heritage Classic that same year the temperature never got warmer than 16.5°F (-8.6°C) making the ice too brittle to support the Zambonis' weight.

Specifically, it seems the average temperature at Dodger Stadium, at the time of day when the game is going to be, is like, 59 degrees or something?

From what I've heard, the average temp inside your standard NHL barn is juuuuuust about the same, so they're saying they'll make it work.

Should Missouri and Michigan State do the somewhat unthinkable and win their respective Conference Championship games, (and, assuming that Florida State does not trip over Duke), who here thinks the BCS people are just going to say, "Screw it, get Saban on the phone"?

Alabama is still number 4...so no need for the phone call, they would get in by just being idle and jumping over the newly lost teams.

As long as would have the usual BCS huge problem  they would be in there despite not being the conference champ and possibly over several teams that won their conference titles. The SEC could care less as long as they have Missouri to point to say their champion got in.

Michigan State winning is not in anyway unthinkable. All Ohio State has to do is have the same piss-poor defensive showing that almost got them beat by Michigan.

34-24 How's that for underperforming?

All in the defense, or lack thereof. Miller and Hyde can only get so many rushing touchdowns before you have to stop the other damn team from scoring some points too. It's the same thing Buckeye fans, commentators, and detractors alike have been saying all season, and it came to a head tonight.
