Welp, The Buckeyes lost. We had such a great run and it got messed up in the last two games. It was fun to watch though, I love a good offensive slugfest.

On the news they're talking about the Packers-49ers games possibly being the coldest NFL game ever. Call me a literal fair-weather fan, but if I had tickets to see my team and the forecast temperature was 20 below, I'd stay home.

20 below? Did the weather shift for the worse? I was reading that it was going to be about -5 or so, still about five to 10 degrees warmer than the Ice Bowl in '67...the record low temp for a game.

The forecast low is down to -22. Because the game is being played in the late afternoon, it could definitely break the Ice Bowl record.

Oh %*@^ that is going to be cold...that'll break it, shatter it, obliterate it! I really pity the fans there....there is being a fan and then there is being simply foolish- your health before your superstitions, spirit, support etc.

...that joke comes up all the time, I don't think they have used metal in extreme cold games since one of them almost lost his lips and tongue in the Ice Bowl.

I don't know, you're the one with the NFL team that played its games for the last 40 years in the coldest place in the Bay Area.

Where I come from we call that: that one time when I was very little and my parents came to get me out of bed because there was a huge amount of snow in the backgarden and we got to play in it at midnight because, my parents figured, it might be gone in the morning.

Tuesday is shorter.

Look at the famous "Ice Bowl" and last week's wildcard game in Green Bay. Another good example is the Michigan-Ohio State "Snow Bowl." No players died, all 3 were exciting, down-to-the-wire games. Might be hard on the players and spectators, but I'd take a game where the weather is a major factor over one in a climate-controlled dome any day.

On a work trip to the USA in December 2005, my hosts took me to a Bears game at Soldier Field. Until that day, I thought American Football was entirely played on plastic grass under domes. Huddled in an oversized borrowed padded coat, I learned that was not so, but at least it only snowed lightly...

It can't be played when it's cloudy? How did this sport become popular in England, then?

Steve Smith says 89 percent chance he will play

Quote
Wide receiver Steve Smith predicted himself to be at 61 percent Friday after downgrading himself to 57 percent Thursday.

He said there is an 89 percent chance he will play on Sunday vs. the 49ers.

Bay Area kid or not, I don't care about the 49ers losing yesterday, football isn't my thing. I have no respect for Sherman's unsportsmanlike attitude, or that of the NFL as a whole. but he has done one thing that I simply cannot abide.

see, the NHL knows how to handle poor sportsmanship.

I can't wait to watch the commercials tomorrow, and hopefully see Seattle cry (I kinda have a personal thing against very nearly the entire population of Washington state as a whole, with exactly 7 exceptions I can name). the only thing that leaves me torn is my insatiable thirst for Manning tears.

There are always three things I root for in a Super Bowl:

1. A shutout game.
2. An overtime game.
3. A punt return for a touchdown.

The reason is simple: none of the three have ever happened in the 48 years the NFL has been doing this Super Bowl thingy.

The only person who would enjoy that more would be Scott Norwood- finally someone to take the attention away from his missed kick!

There has also never been a fair catch free kick in the Super Bowl.  It almost happened at the end of the game last year, but the 49ers decided to return the safety kick.

I don't know of any short field goals returned for a touchdown (as was the case in this year's Iron Bowl).

The 1958 NFL Championship game ended in overtime, but that was in the pre-Super Bowl era.

...Do you know how many fair catch free kicks there have been in the NFL - PERIOD? Off the top of my head, I think there's only been a dozen total.

EDIT: My bad. 22 total attempts since 1933; only five were good. Phil Dawson of the San Francisco 49ers was the last to attempt one, back in September against the Saint Louis Rams. The kick went wide left, and the Rams returned it out of the end zone - but for only nine yards, and no time on the clock.
