--- Quote from: a pack of wolves on 26 May 2010, 19:51 ---The soundtrack was pretty bad, I guess it fit with the sentimental script but the effect was to push it thoroughly into corny territory. That last line really made me cringe. A shame really, I liked the stuff about the vortex and Herzog is an excellent narrator.

Really?  I thought the last line was quite good since it summarized very well what the entire short movie was about.  That is, a look at the nature of immortality and longing and that: isn't it quite better to live your usefulness and when that time is over to simply die, rather than live the rest of your long, long existence wishing to be useful again but will never be?  The entire movie is about the plastic bag trying to find happiness (through a purpose) after its original purpose is ended.  He does this by falling in love with another plastic bag, admiring the world, looking for the vortex, and the admiring all the monsters when it has nowhere else to go, but its thoughts keep going back to its 'maker' and its true place.  To cringe at the last line is to cringe at the whole story, I think.  I mean, if you don't like the story, that's fine.  But you can't like the story and cringe at the last line, IMO.

And yeah, Herzog is a good narrator.

--- Quote from: Boro_Bandito ---Sorry about that, was having a really bad day, thought you were pokin' fun at me for going to film school when Herzog didn't because of the placement of the post and I was open to attack someone.

S'all cool, brochacho.

--- Quote from: Boro_Bandito ---Also that bag short was okay, but like, nothin' revolutionary. Like way to steal the story from Brave little Toaster ya hack, /sarcasm.

a pack of wolves:
The story is pretty cringeworthy. But even if it wasn't having "I wish you had created me so that I could die" as your last line is still poor writing. It's far too blunt, it screams out the fact that it's the last line of the film and here is our very obvious point in case you somehow missed it. I don't mind a little lack of subtlety, but what with the music as well I was getting tired of being battered around the head by mawkishness by the time that line rolled around.

I didn't cringe once watching it.  I rather enjoyed the philosophical musings of a plastic bag floating around, voiced by the craziest movie director on our planet, looking at things a religious plastic bag would.  Mawkish writing?  Yeah.  It was.  Was the point of it kitsch?  Yes.  But was the entire movie kitsch (which is what I think you think)?  No, I don't think so, because I can enjoy a re-examination of something so trite as immortality and environmentalism if it's got Herzog-wacky-pants and some pretty entertaining cinematography.  That in of itself isn't trite or worthless.  And I think the next time I bag my groceries from the grocery store I'll think of this movie.

If the movie makers failed to engage you, that's fine.  That's the movie makers' problem, their failure.

But they sure succeeded with me.  I think I'm going to rent Fitzcarraldo.
