When you look at panel 3, you can just see the bottom of Faye's shirt below her left arm, implying her normal self. It blends in pretty well with the background though, which is why it does seem like she's as thin as Dora.
That's how I saw it anyway.

She avoids relationships because she's afraid of losing them, she stifles ambition because she's afraid of failure.  She avoids the prospect of a rewarding platonic friendship with Sven because she's (In my interpretation) afraid of how society will judge her.

And it's all her father's fault.  You know I've got an uncle with a ten year old daughter who has now twice attempted suicide?  I should force him to read this strip.

The uncle or the daughter? From the context I'm guessing the uncle, but...
