Ok what the fuck is with everyone on the comments section all hatin' on Jawbox. That is expressly not cool and fucking lame, I'm pretty hungover right now and if I knew the individual addresses of all of the dickbags involved in bad taste I'd smite them one by fucking one.

But yeah Jawbox reunion! Fuck yes!

I could never get into Jawbox, but Colossal's cover of this song is pretty good.

They're also a pretty perfect case study of the mid-90's "beloved indie rock band signs with a major label; major label proceeds to have no idea what to do with them because their thought-process ended with 'hey these guys sound kinda like Nirvana, we'll just..... Nirvana them. How did Geffen do that again? We should figure that out';  band is shunned by their original fanbase of rocknroll assholes for jumping ship;  band gets boned in both ends" phenomenon.

I don't think that's entirely accurate. Jawbox and Shudder to Think are both anomalies because they made their best work once they had both left Dischord, whereas most other bands created newer material which wasn't as good and suffered as a result. Without major label funding, For Your Own Special Sweetheart and Pony Express Record would not exist. Dischord would never have funded either band to stay in the studio for a couple of months spending thousands of dollars, which actually happened to work pretty well for these two bands specifically. Temporarily freed from the constraints of budget, they produced their respective masterpieces. It did lead to the disillusion of both bands but there's an argument to be made that it was ultimately worth it to see those records made because they are practically unique.

That's certainly true, but I'd argue that just makes it all the more interesting a case-study, since the end result was no different than that of the bands who went major and released watery, compromised albums.

Or bands that stayed with their indie roots and broke up anyway. No band lasts forever, but it's great if they record a masterpiece or two before breaking up. These bands wouldn't had they not jumped ship for a major. Sure, they'd have pretty good records. But not the amazing records they managed to produce. You could argue that the jump actually prolonged the life of the band beyond that which it would have been had they not done it.

i seem to remember j robbins mentioning in an interview that jawbox probably would've broken up sooner if it weren't for the move to the major label, so you've definitely got a point there.

We should compile a list of bands we'd like to see reunite and send it to Jimmy Fallon.

did you ever hear their second album, Identikit?  it gets a lot of slack, but for my money, it's the best thing robbins has been involved in.  i love it so goddamn much i even wrote about it.

damn straight!  i can't ever listen to it just once, has to be repeated a few times!!!

how good/bad an idea would it be for me to start a burning airlines thread?  i did an huge post on them on another forum, complete with youtube links to their songs etc. and that forum's users pretty much decided at that point to abandon the "forced listening" thread that it was posted in - would be a shame to waste it...

Just start a J Robbins thread and pack it with all the info you can, from Jawbox to Channels with everything inbetween.
