you can't compare any "scary" metal to...Gnaw Their Tongues

"Can't compare scary metal...to scary metal band Gnaw Their Tongues."

???

Also I missed the memo where Death in June are scary. Current 93 have gone through periods of being utterly terrifying, Boyd Rice and Michael Moynihan have mildly purturbed me on several occasions, but not really Di6.

My favourite black metal shirt I own is the one with on the front and 'Burzum Tour 1992' and a map of Norway marked with burning churches on the back. Or my Isengard logo shirt.

True, I guess they're considered metal, though I've never really thought of them as that...a lot of people consider Godflesh metal, but I would never group them with most of the metal bands mentioned in this thread. And I guess that depends on how you define "scary", but I'm generally thinking of stuff that is either eerie/creepy or just straight up terrifying. Death In June on Rose Clouds of Holocaust is pretty creepy imo.

It sounds about as good as I could have hoped.  It makes me think Paracletus will be more sonically diverse than Fas, which was either completely quiet or sandblasting your face off.  I would like it very much if it went back to the Si Monumentum... idea of every song being different and serving its own individual purpose in the album.  This doesn't seem to be the case, though; the beginning and end of this new song, along with the remarkably short 40-some minute album length, suggest that Paracletus will flow like a single very long track.

Not that I'm complaining, anything by Deathspell is 100% welcome

Also I know that I am complaining like the whiny bitches I imagined would complain when it was announced DsO had gotten Season of Mist to handle distribution of their new album, but the fact that anything is getting revealed ahead of the release date sort of damages the whole mystique that the band, along with most of the bands on NoEvDia, maintained for so long.  It's obviously pretentious bullshit, but that pretentious bullshit appeals to me

I'm going to stop whining about awesome things that I support now I mean what is this the internet?

honestly, what an interesting thread! but we clearly (all?) have different opinions on what's scary. I mean, I found Funeral Orchestra quite tame, and I'm usually one to scare easily.

Anyway, at the risk of sounding a bit like I piss my pants over nothing, I'd like to add Sleepytime Gorilla Museum to our list. (this one too)

Also: hey! no Meshuggah?

And on the non-metal side of scary/disturbing/unsettling stuff:
* +1 on Throbbing Gristle. I actually fainted at their concert.
* Early things by Eisntuerzende Neubauten can still freak one out today.
* Anyone for some classical music? It's just a string orchestra...

I wouldn't call Meshuggah scary, it's just too pounding and groovy to me. It might be scary without all the polyrhythms/meters that make their stuff fun to listen to, but then all you'd get would just be a shitty deathcore band i guess. Now Meshuggah turning core would be scary!

New DsO though, is fucking metal.

I don't find Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum scary, mostly just bizarre and unnerving. I like it, but it's certainly not something I'd watch often.

Khanate, I don't know if they've been mentioned, but that shit is scary. Especially Dead and it's accompanying video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2Ag4B4m0Cs.

Lesbian: Silly band name, serious metal.

New album Stratospheria Cubensis streaming behind that link, there.

-----

Also I'm listening to the new Salome album right now, Terminal, and that is some genuinely fantastic stuff. Sludgey doom with occasional forays into proper old-school riffage. Kat, the singer is off the fucking hook. Full-on, throat-tearing all the time.

That album is also streaming right here

Actually, come to think of it, most of my favourite metal records this year have involved batshit crazy female front ladies (Ludicra's The Tenant and Howl's Full of Hell, as well as Terminal).

Gnaw Their Tongues/Aderlating

Oh gods Gnaw Their Tongues is so amazingly bleak and scary. I listened to three of their albums in a row and was mortified for days.
Also, holy shit, new DsO and Salome. I know what I'm getting when our bandwidth gets reset.

I'm actually pretty surprised that Paracletus sounds like a natural progression from Deathspell's previous two full-lengths.  It's less bloated than Si Monumentum, more approachable than the ridiculously difficult Fas (though those were both fantastic records in their own right).  Despite it being the shortest of the three, it feels like an ending rather than just another album.  Especially considering that final track, I mean hot dang first time I heard it, it knocked me on my ass with how pretty it sounds.

Some of the Genghis Tron - Board up the house remixes are really fucking unnerving. Been listening to them a lot on grooveshark, you folks should check it out.
For instance the Ergot (DNTEL) remix is full of creepy voicings and screams and it builds repeatedly to this twitching crescendo which makes me jump. It's weird listening to this alone in my parents house...
The recursion (circle mix) is full of weird monster noises. It's really a totally different kind of scary metal to a lot of the stuff talked about here, it feels less atmospheric and more visceral.

New Ulcerate is pretty tops. I mean, I need more listens to say just how much I like it, there is a lot of stuff going on here, but it blew me away on the first run. And I imagine it will be hugely influential in the coming years too, given how the deathmetal crowd eats this shit up, and it being a bit of a departure from current deathmetal trends.

Also I missed the memo where Death in June are scary. Current 93 have gone through periods of being utterly terrifying, Boyd Rice and Michael Moynihan have mildly purturbed me on several occasions, but not really Di6.

The very early stuff is pretty unsettling, if you think about it too long. "We Drive East", in particular, is almost viscerally unpleasant.

Current 93 are far more disturbing in general, however.

Maybe I'm a sell-out prat, but I'm very much in the doom camp when it comes to scary metal. Anything else seems too energetic to be genuinely uncomfortable. Guess it comes from being a whore for Swans (not metal, but relevant here).

It's mostly in their second album.  The only reason I say blackened death is because "death metal" doesn't quite cut it to describe them.  They do too many things outside of death metal (some of the weird breakdowns from Nightmare Made Flesh, mostly), and the only closest representation I could find was blackened.

(yes, that really is the best picture of their sole album I can find.)
Not sure what I find unsettling about it. It's probably the vocal style, which took forever to get used to. I can't say I like them too much, but it's certainly memorable.

I agree with you that Shining is excellent, but the off and onstage antics of Kvarforth have never really come through in his music at all. (Or at least I should say, for me)

His records have always been excellent, but not once have they ever given me the creeps. But it seems that I'm in the minority on that.

Guys... This video kind of creeps me out but I find it so brilliant. the camerawork is perfect.

Ballet...With funeral doom metal.

I find this quite good tbh. I always felt like Funeral Doom Metal in the vein iof Shape Of Despair, Skepticism and Until Death Overtakes Me had a strong feeling of dance... A very slow one though.
