Finally beating *that* game....

<< < (23/26) > >>

Alex C:
I can't help but think that FFVII was merely a product of Square finally having the hardware to stretch out a bit, for good or ill, with drawn out sequences like the Golden Saucer representing one of the missteps. Besides, after Chrono Trigger and FFVI I already knew that Square were uncommonly ambitious storytellers compared to other console developers, so the impact was rather blunted.

Beyond that, I tend to get bored when the Big Bad of a game starts babbling about life streams and all that other bizarro bullshit that gets trotted out in JRPGs these days. When it comes right down to it, how the bad guy wants to end the world doesn't really matter, and spending time on why he wants do so is only really a good move if it's remotely comprehensible or can be related to or at least understood on some level. In a way, I preferred Kefka and Lavos; they were fairly shallow characters with barely any screen time, but at least that meant that time could be spent on the characters I gave a damn about instead.

Ozymandias:
Kefka was a delightful villain.

There are so few video game villains who can say they won. Dude became a fucking god and destroyed the world, ruling what remained with an iron fist and a beam of unstoppable destruction. I love that dude.

Yeah, honestly, FFVII is super important and not that great. To be perfectly honest, Square's made a few great games and generally been mediocre otherwise. Oh well.

Alex C:
I also like how the explanation for his insanity was barely more fleshed out than "A wizard (okay, magitek) did it."

Storm Rider:
But he was still way more entertaining than pretty much... any other villain in the series.
