So apparently they are doing a remake of the 80s series V. In fact good olde SyFy channel are showing the original series.  Any thoughts?

I might give this a shot though.

I remember watching it on TV when I was like around 12.  I loved it so much and I got it for Christmas a couple years later.  I watched the DVD that I got and had no idea what was going on because my parents got me V, whereas the show I watched on TV was V: The Last Stand or something of that kind.  Totally amazing show though, I'll see if I like this new one, the old one is quite dated.

Yeah I watched a bit of the old one because SyFy had a marathon of it the other day and a lot of it was pretty lulzy (though I do wonder if that's due to concept or execution).

so it looks alright to me.

alan tudyk!   but he's a v.   and he died.   but wait, he's not dead!

i suppose they went so quickly to the reveal since it's a remake and everyone knows the visitors' secret already.

This show has some real potential.

I guess they figured that a lot of people knew about the basic premise so they revealed a ton of stuff.  (Who knew we would see more than one lizard unmasked in the very first episode?)

I am somewhat excited to see where the show is going to go now.

I am extremely interested in this thanks to the original and the presence of people from Firefly and The 4400, but I have a regular engagement on Tuesday nights from 7:30 to 9:00, which sucks.

So the internet will let me get around that.

I watched till they killed and revived Nathan in the season finale for the third time and created Sythan/Nylar (whatever the hell you want to call it). Is the new season any better?

I am pretty aware of cultural phenomenons from generations before myself, but I hadn't know V existed until this came out.

I wouldn't say its a forgone conclusion that everyone already knows the V are evil aliens and that wasting time with a build up would be pointless. Then again, they didnt agree so we all know their dirty little secret. And as far as 'crappy' sci fi goes. As long as they through enough money at it and have strong designers on the series, I am more than willing to sacrifice writing directing and acting as long as its merely competent. Hence my still watching Heroes.

On the otherhand, is this the show to fill the void of Battlestar Galactica? I strongly doubt it. I will chalk Battlestar as a phenom alongside things like Firefly as singularities in their own right.

Although, it's worth noting that BSG prequel/spinoff series Caprica starts in January. The pilot, which was released on DVD, was fairly promising. It's not the same, but they say "frak," and it was better than that god-awful straight-to-DVD release "The Plan."

It just means its set in a shared universe with Battlestar Galactica. Its like Star Wars Episode I and Star Wars Episode IV. Sure it's set in the same universe, but is it the same at all? Not even close.

Without the characters we know and love we are robbed with an integral part of what it once was. Frankly if you want to make another "BSG" (Im using quotes to say, the next series to fill its considerable void), you are better off creating a new and rich world, realizing the world is as much fun as realizing the characters. And the fact that the new BSG is a remake in itself, but it was a generational gap between the two.

I feel your pain. If you're craving hard-SF TV, I'd recommend Babylon 5. Hulu is streaming the first two seasons and The WB's website is rotating hosting seasons every month (this month they're back to season one). It's not as polished or dark as BSG, but it has all the elements of a great show - finely crafted characters, overarching plotlines, and a real sense of direction. Series creator and showrunner John Michael Straczynski wrote 92 out of B5's 110 episodes, and it's been described as a novel for television.

Of course, SF being what it was in the 90's, the first season is pretty campy. Add on the fact that the actor portraying the commanding officer in the first season is absolutely atrocious and it's a little hard to get into. But I guarantee if you stick it out, about midway through season 2 you'll be absolutely hooked.

I say all of this, assuming of course, that you haven't seen it already. If you have, my bad. If you haven't, definitely check it out.

Also: the prequel TV-movie pilot is terrible, terrible, terrible. Just read a synopsis and start with ep1.

B5 is a highly lauded and fairly mediocre show. I will grant that it was one of the first sci-fi shows to ever reach that sort of epic scale, but goddamn it had bad dialogue, bad acting, and bad CGI.

I will agree, though. If you manage to stick out season 1(good luck; took me three tries) the rest of the show is worth your time.

Anyhow. I liked The Plan. It was like a bunch of moderately interesting deleted scenes loosely tied together by a narrative of two Cavils.

I'm ambivalent about V right now. I will watch the four episode mini-season thing they're doing then decide if I'm going to continue watching it. I still enjoy Flash Forward, the other show packed with ex-Firefly, Lost, and BSG actors on ABC, though.

He means zzzzzzzzzzzz.

I watched it and with only basic knowledge of the show (they are lizards and also bad, but some are all viva la resistance), I liked it. I do wish they hadn't introduced the visitors as bad guys so soon, but can't really change it now, so I think if they don't go too fast, it'll get better. But hey, at least it's not like Lost of Heroes and they're answering questions right off the bat. :-P
