I already posted about this on their official site so here is that post quoted....

Honestly, I had hope for this album. Hope that these guys would hold enough sway to squeeze a great sounding album out in this industry of flat, over-compressed trash. Unfortunately, another awesome rock album with obviously great rock musicians and tunes has been completely screwed over by big business and money grubbing label execs.

Mr. Homme, Grohl, and Jones how can you listen to the final product? Nothing stands out at you, everything is flat. You can't turn it up or else it fatigues the ears. Somewhere in there exists some amazing rock jamming and awesome dynamics. Why would you want to release a compromised product?

Go listen to Robin Trower's album from the 70s, "Bridge of Sighs" or Josh's own band Kyuss' album Blues For The Red Sun, these albums jump out at you, excite you, and that ISN'T just because of the great players and songs.

I'll be starting a petition to try and get a version with the dynamics intact, and I hope my fellow music fans will support me. Because a great album like this can NOT stay in this utterly awful format with all the emotion sucked out of it through shoddy mastering practices.

Thank you for reading.

I couldn't even listen all the way through it was that awful. I can hear the sounds coming out and know they're well written songs and well played, but they sound like ass.

I disagree that the compression ruined the album.  I think the album is reasonably boring dynamic range aside.  It would probably be less boring if it were uncompressed some, but I don't think it will ever be a good album.

I think you're underestimating the power of dynamic range. I think it would sound much better to you with better sounding production.

MAYBE just maybe this will get as much attention as Death Magnetic did, because I'm definitely not the only one who's noticed this.

I gave this group a listen and I just don't think compression is the main problem.

People still think that internet petitions actually influence things?

occasionally they actually do... an internet petition is the reason the awesome tv show Wonderfalls was able to be released  on DVD after being canceled 4 shows into the series (they had already filmed all 13 eps).

I think she meant Internet petitions affecting things that weren't extremely nerdy to begin with

I meant that Them Crooked Vultures probably don't care about that some people on the internet think that their album is overcompressed. They probably were pretty happy with the sound of it before it got released, and are still happy with it now?

Also snopes backs me up as well, giving the reasons I probably would have given, all in one handy spot.

Long story short, either the band or somebody who the band trusts enough to give them creative control decided that they wanted the level of compression on the album. Overcompressed? Perhaps, but you might as well yell at them for their songs being too long.

Actually to be fair albums being overcompressed is often a result of label interference

I listened to a few songs from this record and it's not the compression or even the mastering which is specifically at fault. It's basically everything. It sounds like literally every decision they made regarding production and recording was a bad one. Same with every QOTSA record since Rated R. Same with most rock records released on a major label. I guess it didn't help that Alan Moulder was involved because his records always end up sounding like they were conceived in a Los Angeles studio with twenty stereo speakers each louder than god and as many freshly cut lines of cocaine on the mixing desk. Namely because they are.

If you don't like the way this record sounds, don't bother with it. There's a lot of options out there. Try listening to some well recorded music instead. Vote with your dollar.
