Amusingly, a quick google search involving "Doherty" and "The Who" reveals that Pete Doherty has been, in fact, involved with The Who.

I like to think it was an elaborate joke playing on the band's name.

That must be it then, I wasn't thinking of a specific person, or role, or anything, just that Doherty was somehow connected with The Who. Or I could have just mixed up the two names while I was young and that bit of mental short-circuiting has never come to light until now.
