Swag Me The Fuck Out

--- Quote from: Cernunnos on 21 Feb 2011, 13:41 ---So you're saying that this subgenre of rap is inherently and indelibly homophobic and bigoted, and to remove that from it would damage its essential qualities? Or are you just being foolishly fatalistic?
--- End quote ---
I'm saying it doesn't matter. Complain about faggot, complain about nigga, complain about the sexism inherent in calling someone a pussy, complain that fuck is an offensive word, all you're doing is distancing yourself from the music. If it sounds good, listen to it, its not your job to save the world from other people's opinions or speech patterns, and trying to claim that your moral compass is more valid than Tyler or any other rappers isn't benefitting anyone but your own sense of ethical superiority.
Professor Snuggles:
That may come off as a little offensive, and I really don't mean it to be. What it comes down to is if the language offends you, don't listen to it. I feel like you'll be missing out on some of the most original rap music in 10 years, but if calling someone a faggot is an insurmountable barrier for you, than don't listen. You wont be bothered by the morality if you don't hear it.
JD:
psh Shad is way better.
KvP:
It's hard if you're a structuralist. Guys rapping about murder isn't all that objectionable given that nobody seriously condones murder - that's a sort of vaudeville. But plenty of people seriously condone rape and of gay-bashing. It's pretty obvious that the dudes are rapping about rape to get a rise out of people but there's remarkably little distance from reality there. It's just exaggerated in the case of sexual assault (forcible instead of "grey" rape, etc.) and not really exaggerated at all in the case of homophobia. It doesn't really have anything to do with OFWGKTA in particular, and with culture in general.

You know what distancing myself from bigots and their music doesn't really seem like a bad thing. Actually it's kind of a good idea, if you don't want to look like one yourself!
Personally, I don't know if OFWGKTA are actually homophobes. That's not even the point. The point is, by some mysterious mechanism, I am apparently not allowed to state any discomfort due to them or any other musical artist appearing to be so. I would appreciate it if someone could explain why I, an active participant in western culture, am not allowed to have a dissenting opinion about an artwork that exists within that arena?
