Basically I take offense to the lazy notion that "if you don't like it, don't listen/look at/read it". It insinuates that people ought to merely passively absorb culture instead of being active in changing, forming and creating it. If that's all you wanna do that's fine, whatever i guess.
this is not to say I particularly feel strongly one way or another about OFWGKTA. Yonkers is pretty okay! most interesting thing posted in this thread yet, minus the homophobia.
edit: I had another thought-- seeing as the initial response I made was in reference to the notion of whether criticising homophobia in rap had any merit in general , probably shouldn't have attatched "I" to it in my previous post. Personally I'm not that keen to make a big issue of it myself; it really isn't something i spend a lot of time thinking about. but hearing it said that it was nobody's business to make such a criticism was just too ridiculous a blunder to pass up.

Explains these lyrics from Yonkers: "While Syd is tellin' me that she's been gettin' intimate with men/(Syd, shut the fuck up) Here's the number to my therapist/Tell him all your problems, he's fuckin' awesome with listening," which implies the concern for Syd's well-being is due to the fact that she's sleeping with dudes and not girls.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that Syd's lesbianism explains or excuses the homophobia present in OFWGKTA's music, only that it might indicate they're "adopting the mantle of a homophobe" as Tommy said. The consequences of homophobia being professed by a narrator in a song (whether or not the artist in question is homophobic themselves) is at the heart of what is being debated, not OFWGKTA's particular prejudices.

I'd point out that gay manhood and lesbianism are really two different things, especially when lesbians also have sex with men. Homophobes just hate that most of all.
